Is it possible to connect to of the latest MBAs with a thunderbolt cable and have their displays mirrored (ie put one into target display mode).
No, MBair doesn't support Target display mode.
You have any documentation on that?
I don't see on any thunderbolt target display mode instructions an exception that excludes MacBook Airs.
Unless things have changed, you can only do Target Mode display on the 27" since 2009 and then later on the 21.5". The 27" can be a display for a MBair but the MBair can't do TMD for another machine.
I could be wrong but I've never seen anything to the contrary..
That's what I thought the OP was asking. Whether the MBA's display could be mirrored to a compatible device (like a 27" iMac). But then again, in the title, he mentions two MBA's.
The bigger question is why would anyone want to mirror one MBA on another? LOL
Nope. As stated, mirror two MBA displays.
For pair programming.
It would make a great "angry birds" display... pop that bird from one screen to the other.
Although TDM isn't supported you can accomplish the same goal by using Screen Sharing through the network.
Enable it in System Preferences > Sharing on one MBair and access through the finder on the other MBair. It would be the same end result in a less efficient method.
