When I insert a movie DVD, it checks if for 5-10 seconds then ejects the disc which is a problem since I use my Mac to watch movies.

I recently updated my OS X via apple (I don't know if this caused the problem).  Is this a common problem recently and what steps can I take to troubleshoot it?

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    1. Shut down the computer.

    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.

    3. Wait fifteen seconds.

    4. Attach the computer's power cord.

    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Reset the PRAM and NVRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

    1. Shut down the computer.

    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

    3. Turn on the computer.

    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

    6. Release the keys.

Go to: Apple / System Preferences / CDs & DVDs and make sure that "Open DVD Player" is selected When you insert a video DVD:

Then if it is still not working, make an appointment with your local Apple Store or AASP and have the Drive serviced. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

Yes budget, that's why I'm running a Mini instead of a Pro.

If you find that the drive is still having problems with some or all DVDs, then you might want to consider picking up a tray loading external DVD drive and spare your internal drive any further grief.

My iMac spits out any attempt to insert DVDs, Cds etc. With the tremendous amount of defect reports on the iMac Superdrives, and the incompatability of Mac's external drive, it is clear that they want you to buy a new iMac. (now they dont have optical drives).
