What format are your books in? On your MacBook Pro, secondary click the book, click "Get Info" and see the specs. Then, go into iTunes and click File > Add to Library. Add the book in question. This could be done with .pdfs as well.

I tried this Alex but nothing showed up. The format appears to be .mobi

You cannot connect a memory stick to the iPad to transfer files. It is not designed to work that way.
You can read this forum for the explanation on how to do what you want to do. If the books are DRM content, this may not be possible.

The books are now on the OP's MacBook Pro. The OP is not trying to connect a memory stick to an iPad.

Well .... duh ... that shows how closely I read the OP's post. Thanks Ralph. Sorry jeezlouise!
However, the link that I referenced does talk about how to get the .mobi books onto the iPad.

This may be a repeat of what Alex was trying to explain.
First, do you have iBook on your iPad? If not go to the iPads app store, find iBooks and download it to your iPad. It's free.
Is your MacBook Pro the computer you have synced your iPad with previously? If so then start iTunes on your MacBook Pro and use the menu to check for updates. Download and install any updates to iTunes that'ay be available. Then start iTunes on your MacBook Pro and connect your iPad to the MacBook Pro.
In the left column of iTunes on the MacBook Pro click on Books. Drag the books you copied from your memory stick into the window on the right side of your iTunes.
Then select your ipad in the left column of iTunes and and select book in the right panel. Sync the books you copied into iTunes onto your iPad. If they are in the correct format they will be copied to your iPad and you can read them in iBooks.
