Why doesn't my hard disk appear?

Today my 2.53 GHz MacBookPro got real slow, so I tried to run Disk Warrior, and was unable to restart with the DW disk--just had the spinning circle gray screen for nearly an hour. Was able to reboot from my Lion install DVD, and ran Disk Utility, which saw the hard disk. After 2-3 hours of trying everything I could think of (applejack didn't fix it: repeated I/O error, retried booting from Disk Warrior without luck), I reluctantly decided to erase the HD with Disk Utility. I tried to reformat the HD into one partition but could never get that done, either...the message was"could not partition disk to the final block."

Now when I try to reinstall Lion from my DVD, I get as far as the screen that says "Select the disk where you want to install OS X," but nothing appears in the window so I can't install.

I am stuck; anything else to try before making a Genius Bar appt?

Thanks.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), (all Apple all the time)
