I just updated to iLife 11 and iPhoto will not open. I get the following message:

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
This library must be upgraded by the iPhoto Library Upgrader application before you can use it with iPhoto. Please reinstall iPhoto from your iLife disc.

Where do I get the iPhoto Library Upgrader application from?

    Thank yo for your reply.
As I mentioned I just installed iLife 11 and upgraded to iPhoto 11. There are currently no iPhoto updates available. I found this article and I believe this could be my issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4431
My guess is I didnt have the latest verion of iPhoto before I upgraded, but Im surprised apple would allow me to install an update from a version its unable to update the current library for without being able to update it.
    What are your thoughts?

If you now have the latest version - 9.1.1 - and it does not work your best bet is to load the backup of your library prior to upgrading and convert again

Another option is to use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - the free version can correct this issue according to their support forum

Unfortunately due to a hard drive failure I don't have any backups from before I installed iLife 11.
iPhoto Library Manager costs $20. It does not seem right to have to pay because apple failed to include the software required to update a Library from an older version. Is apple likely to fix this issue anytime soon? Surely a large number of other people are having the same problem?

You can rename your old iPhoto library and open iPhoto again. This will allow you to create a new library, to which you can add your photos thru File>Import to library...

You can rename your old iPhoto library and open iPhoto again. This will allow you to create a new library

Why do that when all you have to do is Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' ...

to which you can add your photos thru File>Import to library...

Be very careful that you don't import a Library to another one.

Well, I just got a new MBP 13" and iPhoto 9.1.1 is installed. I didn't read about these issues first, and tried pointing to my saved library on an external disk. Now, when I option/open iPhoto it doesn't give me a choice to create a library. It simply gives me the message, "no can do or whatever it is"...and I have to quit the program.

    Any hints? Thanks

    James:

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:

    Fix #1

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

    Fix #2

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.

    Fix #3

Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Hopefully one of these will work and you won't have to resort to Fix #4, starting over with a new library and importing the original files from the current library.

I had been having loads of trouble syncing calenders between ipad and my imac. after a very long and drawn out process with apple support, the issue was fixed, except my iphoto would or could not open my photo library. I had been putting off calling tech support again because of the last issue, and i found your thread here, fixed it with fix #3, now have all my old pictures back and a few that i thought had been eaten by my machine!! thanks again mate, saved me a whole lot of hassle.

I encountered a similar problem after migrating from a 2008 Macbook Air Snow Leopard iLife '08 to a 2011 Macbook Air Lion iLife '11.

The permissions in my home folder we messed up, with a bunch of access control lists.

    1) I updated iPhoto with latest update

    2) To remove all ACLs in my home folder:
        In a terminal window I ran: sudo chmod -R -N ~/.

    3) Followed instructions in this article to repair my user permissions:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
Which says to boot in Recovery mode, open a terminal, run resetpassword and run the "Repair User Permissions".

After that, I was able to update my iPhoto library to to the new iLife '11 version.
