Going back a few versions of iTunes, when I opened up iTunes and pressed play iTunes would select a random song and start playing in shuffle mode. Which is what I want.

In more recent versions of iTunes when I open iTunes up and press play it always starts with same first song in the list regardless of whether shuffle has been selected or not.

Is there any way to fix this or at least a possible fix in future versions?

This isn't "customer support", it is a user-to-user forum, where other people who use iPods can offer help and advice (based on their own experiences) on how to get the best out of your iPod.

However, you can, if you wish, submit suggestions to Apple, such as your desire to have your preference re-instated back into iTunes, at http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html which is feedback specifically for iTunes. It helps if you keep your comments constructive and positive.

As for the lack of response here; it's possible that your post slipped from the front page of discussions and was missed by anyone who could have contributed before. Remember, the way these disussions operate is by someone who feels they understand your issue offering to help. It does not work by every post being scrutinised and allocated to an employee, or even to another user. This is the first time I've seen either of your posts, and I check the forums several times a week.

In the meantime, I've just done a very simple test and found that if I have the shuffle button turned on, and then close iTunes, then the next time I open iTunes and press Play, a different, random, song is played. So I'm not sure what could be causing your problem. If other users have read your post, but found that they cannot replicate the problem you have, they are less likely to respond, simply because - what could they say, "mine works okay"?
