Right click on clip> Split clip.

If your some reason you mean side by side (2 different clips)> drag clip/pic into the other>Side by Side.

    Hope this helped.

Split Clip is not one of the choices available in the dropdown menu. It does have Split Event Before Clip but I have no idea what that is supposed to do. (If this clip is in the middle of an event, what can that mean?) iMovie Help never heard of it. I asked Help how to split a clip and was presented with a couple of options. They don't do anything but "bonk," though. And Yes, I repaired permissions. So how do I splt a clip?

sure it does - you usually 'split'/edit Projects not Events:

    split clip.jpg

set the playhead in a clip IN A PROJECT to any given position, right click, choose 'split', or select in the menu, or shift-cmd-s

    ------------

the Split Event Before Clip is useful to create a NEW EVENT from another, existing one:

example, in the morning, you did record the wedding, and on same SDcard in the evening the party. you like to create two diff Events, just split the one to two, rename it ....

    I recommend Vivideo which can:

    * Capture video from camcorders, photo cameras, TV tuners.

    * Choose between 300 video effects and transitions.

    * Insert one or more audio tracks in your media file.

    * Split video into scenes and delete unnecessary ones.

    * Burn edited Movie to DVDs.

    Hope it helps

The program you're looking for is AviDemux...

"Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks"

I've used it myself for splitting a long file into smaller sections, or simply cutting and 'throwing away' some unwanted parts.
