    HI

OK ... plug the external drive in ... look to the top right corner of your screen... there's a maginying glass icon which lets you search for files. This is called Spotlight. If there's a tiny '+'  sign in the middle of the magnifying glass then the OS is indexing that drive. It could slow thngs down incredibly. If it is you can stop the process from the system prefernces / spotlight/Privacy settings.

If that's not the issue ... then right click on drive Icon and do a Get Info. What is the drive's Format? If it's FAT32 or even NTFS then that might be it. I've seen bad things happen with FAT32, particularly if the drive is ever used on a PC. If it is you'll need to reformat it (back up all data of course).

Or you might have a flakey drive. Is it USB or FW? FW is hightly recommended for video....

Even cheap drives are reasonably fast these days .... but you might hit a combination of USB, 5400rpm (or lower) 60 fps video, that won't work.

Or your USB/Firewire buss is bad. Or you have a bad cable.

If it plays from the internal drive thn it has to be one of these things. First step is to get another drive and see if that works. You just have to switch things out bit by bit until you isolate the issue.

Maybe go to an Apple Store? The Geniuses probably have all the bits to diagnose.

    Best

The problem is with all my events folders that were created prior to the latest update.  Any new event folder I now create and files imported into them work fine.  With my internal or external drive.  The problem is I have quite allot of work that is in the these event folders that I currently cannot use.  This upgrade just might have cost me months of work that I can not longer use. I hope someone can help me figure out how to solve the problem.

Sorry, but if adding the old events in their containing folder, to either the Final Cut Events Folder on your External drive, or to the Movies/Final Cut Events folder on your internal drive still makes FCPX crash then you've got coruption. (I thoiught it only the Projects that were problematic).

THis is the only tool I know of that *might* help ...

    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/

It detects and repairs (maybe) corrupt media and Projects within FCP X.

    One more thing ...

I just tried the Pro Maintainence Tools on a corrupted project that I couldn't lanuch. Made FCP X crash as soon as it loaded.

The porject repair tool  didn't work .... but the crash log analysis tool told me my crash was due to a text/font error.

I opened the app Font Book ... selected all the fonts and Varified them all. One showed up with a Minor error. I deleted it ... ran FCP and it opened the Project!!!!!

    Really ....

Get the ProMainrenace tool ... there's a 15 day demo and analyse your FCP Crash logs. You never know.

PS: I bought the tool ... just for that one trick! ;-)

Project Repair has the pleasant side-effect of optimizing your project files. So if it can't fix it, FCPX ends up crashing sooner because it takes less time for the project to load.

This problem has gone from bad to worse.  The program freezes at startup.  When it gets to updating event it freezes.  I have gone back through all the above comments and did all the suggestion again with no success.

I'd advise you to not edit video from an external drive.

Move the media to your local/media server drive while you are working with it.

I've had nothing but issues trying to work directly off external drives. Especially if they are USB.

    Maybe I'm just old fashioned...

I am having a similar problem since I updated to 10.0.4....the program is crashing when I try to load video (from an SD card Sandisk 8GB 30mb/s) taken in AVCHD codec. I've been loading such video for months without a problem, it only occurred since I updated the software. I'm thinking that perhaps the latest software update may have taken my computers capabilities over the limit although they are saying nothing to confirm this at the Apple Store. I'm using an older iMac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8GB memory.

sounds similar to my problem also when importing AVCHD media from my GH2.  some clips work, and some don't, seems maybe like the higher bitrate ones with more motion like steadicam or slider in front of moving trees.  unfortunately i updated both my mini and mba to 10.0.4 and they both now exhibit the problem, but i can't roll back to 10.0.3.

I have similar problems with the program freezing up after upgrading to 10.0.4.  And it was the instant I upgraded.  It's doing the same thing whether it's a new project from this past weekend loaded in through 10.0.4 or an updated project from 10.0.3 or earlier.  The earlier versions ran as clean as ever, but now 10.0.4 is crashing about every 5 minutes as soon as I try to start playing something from the timeline or scrub through a thumbnail.  I'm using raid-0 external drives with firewire 800 connection.  Running a 8 core mac pro with 20 gigs of ram.  Should be plenty of power to due the trick.  I also have a 27" imac with 16 gigs of ram having similar issues off of a different drive than my tower.

I am still having issues but making some progress.I have the same setup as you.  I think I have narrowed it down to a couple of issues.  One I think it might be an audio problem.  Another might be a conflict with another program.  Try using FCP without any other programs running.  You might need to dumb the preferences and restart the app.  Also have you tried  the suggestion about about trashing the app and then downloading it again?

This application freezes on me all the time. Trying to futz with the audio makes it crash more often. I've ordered the OWC Mercury SDD PCI Express card with 480 gigs of lighting fast access for $960 for my Mac Pro. I'm hoping this makes FCP X able to do something other apps have been doing for many years - able to do a simple rough cut of a feature movie.

I'm also having exactly the same issue. As soon as it starts and I try clicking anything, it just freezes, and I have to force quit.

I've tried trashing the pref., downloading the app from scratch again, and doing a permissions repair.  Nothing is helping.  It would help to know if anyone is actually having success with 10.0.4.  At least anyone used to editing on the new timeline with lots of effects.  I'm finding that if I just put along as if I wasn't used to the new format, it stays open pretty well, but if I'm zipping around cutting everythign together really fast, it'll quit on me every time.  I'm not editing any faster than I was 6 months ago, so it's gotta be software issue.  Also, I have a ATI 5770 card in there for graphics with a gig of ram.  Everything was running rediculously smooth before the 10.0.4 update.  I'm 100% certain it's the update, and not anything to do with the systems.  It's problems with both older projects (pre-10.0.4) and new ones where everything was loaded in after the upgrade.   I have a feeling that the only thing that will fix this is 10.0.5.    On the upside, I can finally show clients a smooth flowing picture via the external monitor.
