Malicious add-on using iCloud

When trying to use iCloud from a PC I receive a warning that a malicious add-on from the website is causing IE to close.

Any ideas as to a solution?

    Drat. I was hoping it might tell us which add-on was causing the grief.

     

    Maybe we can get more info from your IE add-on manager.

     

    Go "Tools > Manage Add-ons". Select "All add-ons".

     

    What Apple Inc. add-ons can you see in there?

     

    Are any add-ons (of any sort) currently showing as disabled?

    So not even the iTunes detector object or the QuickTime objects. So it seems unlikely that it's an Apple add-on casuing the issue.

     

    Doublechecking ... do you have a Zone Alarm firewall installed on the system at the moment? If so, is it allowing iCloud full access to the internet? (Wondering here if we might be having an odd conflict between a firewall rule and iCloud, manifesting as a grumpy IE connection.)

    Good catch.

     

    It appear to be a problem with IE8 as if I use Firefox the problem does not occur.

     

    A second before the Maicious website' warning appears there is a pop up saying that Apple Inc wishes to install and add-on

     

    So it's a problem with the add-on going in, rather than an existing add-on or plug-in. It makes sense that Firefox would do okay even though IE doesn't, because IE would be using an ActiveX control, and Firefox would be using a Netscape-style plug-in instead.

     

    I'm not sure how much further this might get us, but it might be worth checking to see if this is a general issue with installing Apple ActiveX controls in your IE.

     

    Try heading to the following web page and attempting to play one of the videos:

    IE should ask you if you want to install the QuickTime ActiveX control (because you don't have that showing in your IE add-ons). Do you get another warning message covering that add-on request, too?

    I did download the latest Quicktime update from Apple a couple of weeks ago so wonder if that may have been a dodgy file.

     

    Possible ... quickly doublechecking, though: do you have iTunes installed on that PC too?

     

    (Checking, because normally if iTunes is installed, there should be an iTunes Detector object showing in the IE add-ons too. If both QuickTime and iTunes are installed, but there are no add-ons showing for either of them, then I'm suspecting more a dodgy IE 8 than both a dodgy QuickTime and iTunes.)

    Tomorrow I wil remove the IE8 and reinstall it and see if that cures the problem.

     

    Perhaps before doing that, it might be worth checking to see if this is a systemwide issue with IE 8, or if it's specific to a particular Windows user account. Try creating a new user account on the PC with full administrative rights. Log out of your normal account and then log into the new account. (Don't use "Switch users".)

     

    Try launching IE 8 in the new account and try to use iCloud. (You'd probably need to sign in in the new account. I'm pretty sure there's a seperate lot of user preferences and settings for iCloud for each different user account ... that's the standard model for Apple software.)

     

    If you can use IE 8 in the new account without provoking the Add-on message, that suggests an issue with IE and Windows 7 settings and preferences in your normal user account. Try logging back into your usual user account and doing a reset of your IE as per the following Microsoft document. Make a a note of existing settings and so forth ... we don't want to irretrievably lose anything essential:

    You might also want to doublecheck to see if that resets IE 9 rather than IE 8 ... (The IE 8 instructions I know of are for Vista ... and I've only got IE 9 on my Windows 7 box, so I can't doublecheck the impact of a reset using those instructions on an IE 8 install on a Windows 7 box.)

     

    If the Add-on message hits you in the new user account too, that suggests trouble with operating system or program files for IE. (The distinction between the two is a little blurry when it comes to IE.) So perhaps before a reinstall, you might wish to experiment with an sfc /scannow as per:

    (Again, I can't doublecheck the implications of doing this on a Windows 7 system with IE 8 on board ... I believe my system came with IE 9 preinstalled, although that was a while ago now, and memory may be failing me.)
