"Backed up" is not the phrase that I would use. The documents are saved directly in the app itself if that is what you mean. You backup the documents when you sync with iTunes or when you backup with iCloud.

Thank you. That's what I needed to know. When I backed all of my apps to my PC, all of the third party apps required that I save docs to folders. Only the Apple apps Didn't.

I'm curious though. If I bought a new iPad, I assume it would sync & pull all saved apps from my PC. Do you know the process for bringing the third party data back in?

You have me a little bit confused. When you backed up your apps to your PC the third party apps required folders? I have never heard of this but maybe you are talking about something different than what I am picturing for backup up app.

When you sync with iTunes, the apps are transferred into your iTunes library on the PC. The documents from those apps and the app data are stored in the iPad backup. You can also transfer many of those files to your computers hard drive - and you can create folders for those files on the PC - but you need an app that supports file sharing in order to do that or an app that works with iCloud for syncing documents and data.

To bring the third party app data to the new iPad - backup the current iPad and follow that with a sync with iTunes. Plug in the new iPad and you will be given the option to restore from that backup. Select that option - restore from the old iPad backup - and then follow that with a sync with iTunes. The new iPad should then be identical in content to the old iPad - apps, data, documents, etc. The only things that you will have to enter again are passwords.

Under the apps tab in iTunes, under "File Sharing", the statement directly below states "The Apps listed below can transfer documents between this iPad and your computer".

I assumed, possibly wrongly, that if any files showed in the box to the right of Apps box, they needed to be backed up on my pc. Especially after noticing that there where no files in that box for Apple Apps.

    Am I wrong here?

OK. Now I understand what you are talking about.

Ywas you can backup those files onto the computer - if there are documents that are showing up in that window. You can simply drag the file to the desktop and it will copy to your hard drive. You can use the Save button as well and navigate to a folder where you want to copy the file.

Now - do they need to be backed up to your computer - no, it's not absolutely necessary. Those documents are stored in the iPad backup. Should you copy those files to your hard drive? IMO - it is a good idea to do so. I backup my iPad with iTunes, and with iCloud and I copy the file sharing documents to my MacBook as well. I backup the computers contents with en external drive using the Mac Time Machine application. One can never have too many backups - once again - in my opinion.

In order to see if you have any documents for those file sharing apps, you have to click on the file sharing app icon to the left of the window. If you click on the Pages app icon, the documents will then show up in the window - as long as you have been using file sharing. If you are not using file sharing - it does not happen automatically - its a good idea to start using it.

This article explains how to use file sharing.
