If you have less than that you can install more. Here's a page from Crucial that lists your options
I believe that your iMac is like my mid 2007 MacBook, Apple states max ram is 2gb but if you install 4gb the computer will recognize 3gb. I have 4gb installed and it does recognize 3gb.

Apr 19, 2012 12:06 PM in response to jliversonby tomdav10,I have the same generation of iMac and have done the upgrade up to 3GB as Mike said (using crucial memory). However, I have installed 4GB and it didn't like it only recognises 2GB. Don't buy 4GB
