Q: how do I delete items from my startup disk?

I'm getting an announcement flash up, stating to remove items from your start up disk.  I'm not sure how to do this.  I have gone through my documents and files and moved things to the trash and emptied the trash.  I need more space so I can update softward.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

you delete items just like you have been..just ones that are taking up more space.  click on >about this mac>more info>click on the storage tab in the upper left hand corner of the box and take a screen shot of the lion storage dispay, or list each category and how much is being stored in each category.  Once we have that info, I or someone else can help you further.
