MacPro freezes, monitor fills with little wavy lines

I would appreciate help with this problem.

My MacPro (early 2008, Lion, software up to date, Disk Utilitied) freezes suddenly, colours become distorted, and the screen fills with little wavy lines, a bit like horizontal curly brackets. The Magic Trackpad and Bluetooth Keyboard are unable to control anything.

Working in Safe Mode is possible, but the problem sometimes appears even then.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Here is the diagnostic report - I am afraid I can make no sense of it.

Thanks for responding.

Why not start with Apple Hardware Test.

Do you have Nvidia 8800GT?

Having latest OS isn't always best if you use to and still rely on Rosetta for instance or if you updated and have old files for drivers and extensions hanging around.

If it functions in Safe Mode, what if you just do a quick clean install on another drive and try that?

Unplug all your cables and devices and use the stock kb and mouse.

Thanks for commenting, Hatter.

Apple removed the AHT when Lion was installed.

My video card is the Nvidia 800GT. It has performed flawlessly for 4 years.

Lion has done away with Rosetta; and my Lion install was clean. All drivers were freshly loaded with the latest versions. So neither of these is an issue.

As I said, it functions in Safe Mode, but not always.

My original keyboard was the Bluetooth, which I retired after three years and replaced with an identical model. The original and nasty Mighty Mouse has met a deserved fate.

Are you able to interpret the diagnostic report (I confess I am not)?

Curiously, everything is working fine now. I am gradually reintroducing peripherals to see if any of them is the culprit.

Linc, I enjoyed the video but do not intend to be inspired by it!

AHT was and is present on OEM DVD.

It was installed on the original system drive unless upgraded too.

8800GTs fail due to a defect, sometimes putting one in an over (Google, it works) for 10-15 min. @ 325*F works.

Not everyone did a clean install and because posts usually don't or can't include everything and to avoid the "20 questions".

My OEM DVD is Leopard. I have not been able to load AHT from that. The Lion installation wiped it from the boot drive.

If the problem recurs I will have to look at a new video card. Although 4 years old, the MacPro runs everything I want (including Photoshop) without breaking sweat.

Unfortunately, this does not work.

I have read lots of discussions, the Apple Support documents, followed all the instructions, removing all connections, etc I have tried d, cmd d, alt d and ctrl d. All I ever get is the normal login screen.

There is a lot of discussion on these boards about difficulties with the AHT following an upgrade to Lion. As far as I am concerned AHT is unusable.

Fortunately, my problem has gone away, at least for the time being.
