Q: FCPX 10.0.4 crashes when trying to import media

I updated to FCPX 10.0.4 the other day and just tried to check out some 1080p24 footage I shot with my Panasonic GH2 this morning.  Some clips seem to work fine, but a couple are causing problems.  I use transfer from camera, select a clip or part of it, and select transcode to proxy.  It seems to copy it to the Original Media folder, but crashes.  Nothing ends up in the Transcoded Media folder.  I reopen FCP and it shows the clip as missing, because I have selected to use proxy media.  If I switch to Original, or try to intiate a transcode manually it crashes.  I can remove the clip manually form the Original Media folder to get going again, but same thing happens on that clip.  I just tried again without transcoding and that doesn't seem to work either.  It just doesn't like something about importing these clips.  They play back fine when I view them in the Original Media folder, so they don't appear to be corrupt.  Any ideas?

Unforunately, I don't have another system available I can check these clips with, is there a way to roll back to 10.0.3 to try it?

    Try these suggestions http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3893.

Also try trashing your preference- http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/ Does that resolve it?

Ya, I reviewed the troubleshooting basics, and tried trashing the prefs.  I do have the NeatVideo beta, which I updated after initially seeing the problem, but I don't think it has anything to do with importing the media, I'm not far enough to apply it.  I still need to try removing and reinstalling, I was curious if I can get the old version back.  Is the install file on my hard drive somewhere, or does it have to redownload, even the latest?

Nope it's gone unless you made a backup of the application itself before upgrading.

I actually have a similar problem when I updated to 10.0.4. Some clilps went missing and on my events pane one event has the exlamation symbol next to it indicating that some clips are missing. I have no idea where they went even when I navigate to the /movies/Final Cut Events/[event name].

I still have the trial 10.0.3 download, but unforunately can't run it because it's expired.

There's another guy here that seems to be having similar issues importing AVCHD (same as my GH2).

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18147371#18147371

I removed the problem media and was able to continue for awhile without it on my macbook air while I was away.  Now that I'm back home on my 2009 era mac mini I have since imported more footage and encoutering the same thing on this system (also, unfortunately updated to 10.0.4).  It was at a point where it'd crash everytime it opened.  After a few times it wouldn't crash on opening, but I found that if I scrolled up through the clips in the event viewer, as soon as one particular one started to appear it would crash.  The problem clips seem to probably be higher bit rate because they have more motion like steadicam or slider in front of moving trees.

There's stuff related to AVCHD in my crash reports.  I looked inside the app package and saw this file.  I compared it to the files inside the package from the trial and it's definately been updated.  I haven't experimented yet, but I thought about trying to copy the old AVCHD plugin to the new version and see if it can handle my footage better, but I don't know what else breaks if it's expecting access to new features or something.

       0x11a9f0000 -    0x11ac87fef  com.apple.AVCHDPlugin (2.0.0 - 1014.5.29) <02B6EE1F-C8BA-EB46-14BE-17330045B3C8> /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/PlugIns/RADPlugins/AVCHD.RADPlug/Contents/MacOS/AVCHD

I've got several saved, I can post the full thing, but I know nobody likes scrolling through it all.

This sounds the same as mine. Are you using a Patch on your firmware for the GH 2?

The problem I had (I say had because it appears to have been resolved by the Apple store today) was similar in that thew crash would occur when transferring video data from the SD card to the event browser on FCP, but this only started happening after I updated the spftware to 10.0.4

The fellow at Apple assured me that the update had nothing to do with the problem. he could not verify that high bit rate data is a problem for 10.0.4 or for any version of FCPX for that matter.

My experience is with video and not computers so I am hesitant to give guidence on how the fellow today resolved my problem but I will have a look to see if I can point you in the right direction.

Ya, I'd certainly be interested in whatever they did to fix it.

My GH2 firmware is not hacked, it's the stock v1.1.

I've been using video data from a GH 2 without problems (other than slow rendering) since Apple issued the 10.0.2 update ....until now.

The problem if I understand it correctly, was that there were "Permission" files being generated by the system software unnecesarily.

I checked the trash and found a bunch of files that have been trashed.

    The Final Cut files included:

    com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist

    com.apple.FinalCut..plist

    com.apple.FinalCut.plist.QpB1KHT

    com.apple.FinalCut.plist.Za7boGs

I believe it is standard practice to start here.

They are found by opening Finder...Go...Home...Library...Preferences

By trashing these you are apparently erasing defects that are causing the problem and these files will regenerate automatically in a healthy form to resolve the problem.

The other files that were erased were "widget-com.apple.widget.weather.plist" files (over 100 files)

plus similar QuickTime files (about 40) plus similar iTunes files (over 100 files)

Perhaps you know of these things or maybe someone else on this list could enlighten you to their purpose, I know little about them other than the problem seems to have solved after the Apple technician removed them.

    I hope this helps

I really like using FCPX, I think it is an awesome editing program when it works and I really love the GH2. I hope this can be resolved.

These are the files that get removed when you trash your preferences.

It is, indeed one of the first things you should try if FCP X goes haywire.

To do this correctly (and safely) use Digital Rebellion's free app: Preference Manager.

Are these kinds of crashing problems so prevalent with editing programs that someone had to write a maintenance software package?

Any comment on the QT, iTunes and widget files that were present and erased?

    Ha!

I'm a video editor, not an engineer. Legacy FCP and now FCP X are the two applications which most commonly need to have preferences trashed whenever things go wrong - but they are also extremely complex, so I don't know.

Years ago, when I was using FCP 3, someone replied to my post:

"When Final Cut Pro goes South, trash your preferences first".

That's what I did then and it seems it's even more appropriate now, with FCP X.

For the life of me, I don't understand why Apple don't bring the preference trashing facility into the application - maybe they're in denial!

I had tried manually removing the preferences when following the FCP troubleshooting basics (support link above).  I just tried again using Preference Manager but still have the same problem.

At the state it's in now, scrolling up in the event browser causes it to crash when it encouters a certain clip.  This was an event on an external drive.  I unmounted and restarted FCP, created a new even and tried to import another clip I saved before as an example.  Simply trying to import it causes it to crash, and everytime FCP is reopened after that.  Now, this was created using 'Import from Camera' and copied out of the original media directory, but it's obviously not the original MTS file, I haven't gone all the way back to the source, so maybe the prefs have something to do with the way it imports it.  I have been able to run this through the old version of compressor that came with FCS and get ProRes proxy that will then import as a file and playback without crashing.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/53204788/2012-04-13%2007_19_30%20(id)%20(fcp2).mov

I'd be really curious if this causes FCPX 10.0.3 or other versions to crash, or otherwise on other people's working systems.

Tried again.  Deleted app, deleted prefs with Preference Manager.  Reinstalled FCPX from App Store.  Tried importing clip from SDHC card using 'Import from Camera', deselected all the transcode and analyze options.  Towards the end of the little background process indicator it crashed, no reporting came up.

I submitted a bug report the other day, and just got aknowledgement via email this evening that it's a known issue currently being investigated by engineering.  As I said in my follow up, I sure hope there's an update, fix, or potential work around soon because this is limiting my work in a supposed 'pro' app, and I can't just wait around for another several months for the next minor update to get back to editing my footage.
