Q: Home Share disconnects..

Ever since the latest Apple TV software update (Apple TV Software 5.0 (4099)) my home share has been disconnecting in the middle of playing movies, or TV shows.  I have updated my iTunes software, running 10.6.  I'm just irritated, I rent a movie from iTunes and about 15 mins into the movie home share disconnects.  My laptop is not going to sleep, I have my energy settings set so that it never goes to sleep while I'm trying to watch a movie.  Any advice or any word on if Apple intends to fix this problem would be appreciated.  It is also happening to my roommate and her Apple TV.  Thank you.

Ok...interesting. How about a problem with the new firmware not beeing able to get the computer itself out of sleep or out of the screensaver.

This morning homesharing was still not accessible from apple tv. I went to the computer and simply put it out of sleep by moving the mouse and shazam, home sharing was instantly accessible on my TV!

Maybe together we will be able to help apple help itself.

Yes the same for me. Hundreds of annoying hours and loads of videos later I'm having the same issues. It is definitely an issue with firmware.

    Very Annoying!

Well after a tense wait to see if the 5Ghz network solved the problem, I again write with massive dissapointment that it did NOT work. I lost sharing three times within the first 45 minutes, regaining the share every time I restarted the ATV. So it does appear to be the firmware and at least another link in the chain has been ruled out.

I was so keen to get back to the movie I restarted every time, but didn't check the network strength or connection itself. Interestingly I think I still maintained a connect as when it failed it went back to the start screen where I could still see the latest movies to download! so it would appear to be a break in the network link cuased by the firmware, which is very short or a break in the sharing itself and nothing to do with the network.

What would be interesting is if anyone has the same problem but not using Apple network devices or are not using the same Airport firmware. As I use Airport extreme and Airport express, which itself had a firmware upgrade a couple of weeks ago to 7.6.1 could, although remote still be causing the problem, but I do not appear to have had any issues on the MAC's or server. The next option is to run a 25m ethernet cable directly to the ATV from the MAC so that the wireless network and apple network devises are ruled out totally. With 2TB of iTunes material on a Pegasus R6, this seems the easiest option without having to moving everything.

Either way its a pain in the arse and going to mean another call with Apple, although this time I have some better evidence that they cannot ignore.

Hi all.  I actually did some troubleshooting and ended up taking the advice of one of the first people to respond to my original post.  After changing the channel that my wireless router was on, the problem seemed to clear up.  I rarely have connection issues anymore.  I do live in an apartment complex and there are a lot of wireless networks surrounding my place.  Anyway, I hope everyone else is able to clear up their issue and use HomeShare without interruptions.

Hi, I do not think that this is an network issue

    - there are other streams around here focusing on this and in at least two of them the same problem accours with fixed lines (normal Ethernet)

    - I once have a total lost of home sharing and run the network test build in in the ATV. that stated " no problems"

so I'm very convinced that this has nothing to do with networks ... there might be sideeffects of poor WiFi connections, but this is not the "root cause"

    - I also have both platforms for iTunes (Mac OS and Windows 7) both platforms have the same isues ... so it is not an operating system problem

    - I sometimes look streamed videos on an ipad with home Sharing ... ando also there are the problems... not so obvious as on the ATV but also very often...

.. so my conclusion is simply that this is an iTunes problem ..... and I'm still blame myself several times a day that I updated (for the very first time) both platforms (mac and Win) at the same time

    nice weekend

I am using a hard wired gigabit network and my iTunes reside on a windows 7 home premium computer.  My ATV finds the Mac users in the house with no problem, but try and find the iTunes server on the windows computer and it drops shortly after stopping and restarting home share at iTunes.  My work around involves using my iPhone to find the iTunes server through the remote app and sending the video to the ATV "speakers".  My wiress is interface for the iPhone is an airport base stationwired back to the same gigabit network.  So apple devices are providing the work around.  However my son tells me he can not find the iTunes server on the from his Mac book pro (it takes forever) as of about 2 months ago this started.  He says that if you close the update iTunes dialog box on the windows computer it finds it faster.

I stopped IPV6 on the windows computer and no luck.  I still think the issue is how the ATV is handling DHCP messages and that information stream contains name and address of the computers(s) hosting iTunes in a home share environment.

Been on the phone most of the day with Apple.

Its not the Apple TV!!! the home sharing drops even on the New iPAD. Under apple instructions I have simplified my network and I mean majorly. I was running one Airport Extreme and one MAC Book pro. The MAC Book Pro was hard wired into the Airport extreme. The Airport extreme provide the wireless. It did exactly as the ATV did and home sharing crashed about 20 minutes in, which is longer than the ATV, but either way the iPAD appears to have the same problem.

    So we know its not:-

    ATV 2 or ATV3

We know its not firmware related on the Apple TV

    So what could it be?

Well it could be the Airport extreme firmware, that's been upgraded and the problems started near or around that time, but can be sure of the exact update time.

Its happening on both my MAC Book Pro and Mini MAC sever, so the devices look unlikely as problem areas, although I am now running it with the Firewall turn off and as we speak its just crash again!

    So its back to apple!

Download an app called Fing (network discovery / layout) for iPhone / iPad and when Home Sharing is in a state of not working, run Fing and make sure the devices look as you expect and most importantly that no Apple TV has two IP adds.  My issues was that my ATV2 was getting assigned multiple IPs.  I disconnected that particular ATV2 (leaving my other ATV3's connected) and have been solid since.

Thanks for the info, but I am only using one ATV, the ATV 2 is now disconected as I have the ATV3. Have spoken to Apple again and now it appears the Mini MAC server is not dropping home share, so they are starting to think it is a software clash!

I have to call them back, so I will see what happens

    Hi guys,

I bought my ATV3 two days ago. The issue is the same, dropping of home sharing. In my case the funny thing is that ATV3 although out of home sharing still stays connected to the net. At the same time I am able to home share between iPad2 and iMac. So:

1- If it was an iTunes self related issue, I could not mantain home share between iPad and iMac

2- It is clearly not a router related issue.

3- So it must be an ATV3 related issue or at least between it an iTunes.

Let´s hope the guys from Cupertino are listening willing to help us!

This is obviously a problem as so many people have issues.  I can confirm that my issue is NOT ATV related as home sharing is crashing on the new ipad. It hasn't done it yet on the Mini MAC Server so it could be a software clash. It been playing now for 2 hrs without a glitch! I'm sure we are getting close! famous last words.

Guys, new development. Went to my router and change my security definitions to none. Atv3 is staying Home share connect since one hour and a half. Before it was not going more that 15m. Hope this helps.

I have changed the ATV 3rd gen to my 5Ghz net and didn´tn solve the problem. I have also changed the IP,s range, reinstalled iTunes 10.6.1, define a fix ip for my iMac and my ATV, etc. I´m totally fed up of reading posts and trying "solutions" to the problem. Nothing worked so far. I think that it is an iTunes or iOS problem, and it would be fixed with a software update pretty easily. I´m giving in...
