another possibility is that some images are in stacks
Interesting - I never noticed that Aperture counts images in closed stacks as one. I keep my stacks open all the time because I don't like not to be able to see what's in them.

Thanks folks for trying to help me out!
In my case the problem was solved by restarting my MacBookPro. After restart I found my missing fotos in the trash, where I sent them when editing a large project I just imported!
For some reason they were not visible before restart.
I however truly enjoyed the insight you had in matters relating to my problem!

I am glad you discovered your images, but now I am really puzzled:
The images reappeared in Aperture's trash or the system trash on your Desktop?
Dis you reboot with Aperture still open? Simply rebooting should neither affect the Aperture Library nor your Aperture preferences, unless something really is wrong.
