Hi

I have 2 users on my IMAC and in the past we have both used Aperture.

For some reason it is not working anymore and I cannot work out why?

For one of the users the message 'To use this library make sure its file permissions are set correctly'

Can anyone help?

The library is saved in in a shared location

Something must have changed. First off what OS and Aperture version are you running? And where is this shared location?

OS is Lion, Aperture is 3.2.3

The only thing that I can think of is that I deleted all the old files/folders that were originally imported onto the computer when I set it up, this was done due to them being in the aperture library

Cant think of anything else that has changed, but then again I cant remember the last time ther Mrs tried to use aperture?!?!?!?

You never answered my question about how and where you are sharing the library.

The library is located at: Mac HD/Users/Shared/Aperture Library

It is shared on one computer, my IMAC 21 inch

    I hope this helps?

For one of the users the message 'To use this library make sure its file permissions are set correctly'

    • Who of you both is it, who cannot work with the library, you or your wife? Can you open it without problems?
    • Does the error message appear as soon as the library is accessed, or only after working with it for some time?
    • If you create a new test library in the same location and add some images to it, can you share that one without problems?.
    • What are the permissions on your Shared folder and the Aperture library, as shown in the "Get Info" panel?

I myself can view everything fine, my wife cannot, it gives that message before any window loads up for aperture.

How can I start a test library?  I will then test it.

I will retrieve the permissions and post up as soon as I can

To start a test library launch Aperture, and from the main menu bar go to

         File -> Switch to Library -> Other/New

This will create a new, empty library. Use "File -> Switch to Library" to get back to your regular library after testing.

Since you can open your library, you might try to repair the permissions on your main library with the Aperture Library First Aid Tools, unless Frank Caggiano has another suggestion, when he comes back to this thread.

To repair the Permissions hold down the options key and the command key at the same time while double clicking the Aperture Library. In the First Aid Panel select: Repair Permissions.

Then try again to open the library from your wife's account.

I cannot test the new library as I cant even open Aperture on my wifes login!

I am unsure how you do the first aid part, is it from within Aperture?  or in Finder?

I cannot test the new library as I cant even open Aperture on my wifes login!

That is a different situation altogether - sofar you said the error has been:

For one of the users the message 'To use this library make sure its file permissions are set correctly'

For me this meant: Aperture launches, but cannot access the Aperture library.  Now you are saying that from the other account you cannot lauch Aperture at all?

When you log into your wifes account, and then hold down the option key and double click Aperture, then Aperture should launch and ask you which library to use. At this point she should be able to create a new, empty Aperture Library . Don't you get even that far?

Then probably the Preferences in your wife's account need fixing. Let her remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from her User Preferences in the User ibrary, as describe here:

         Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

See the paragraph: Delete the user preferences

Then try, if Aperture now can be launched and create a new, empty library. If yes, try again to open your main Aperture library from her account.

    If not, post back.

Deleting the user preferences has seemed to work, many thanks

You are welcome; thank you for letting us know.

Now the question remains, how the preferences got to be corrupted in the first place. Usually this happens, if you force-quit aperture or the system crashes. Has anything like this happened lately?
