Q: Kernel Panic While Cloning HDD!!

I put a second hard drive in my Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002, and I decided to clone the old HDD to the new. The first time I tried it, it went on, never starting, just saying "calculating estimated time." In my foolishness, I closed the window, and ignored the warning. The second time I tried it, it went on for a good while, so I left it to it. When I came back the kernel panic screen was up. I restarted the computer, and checked the second HDD. It had about half of the Applications copied into it, so it was working initially. I booted with my install DVD, and ran disk utility and both disks were fine, no repairs needed. What happened? Should I try it again? Should I erase the second HDD and then try again? What was the problem? Did I do ANYTHING right? If anyone knows what it means, this was the kernel panic info:

Volumes is normally only hidden on the Boot Drive, but it can be made visible, but can I see a window that says Volumes on the top of it like Mine, or doesn't yours do it?

I don't think so, unless i'm misunderstanding what you're saying. Wait! Yes, it's what pops up when I type in /volumes, but when I choose one of the volumes, it changed to the name of the volume, (Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD)

I can get it to you, but not yet. I'll tell you why. It had another kernel panic. I had been trying to upload the picture to use, and safari just wasn't cooperating. So I decided to download opera, got the right version, was in the middle of downloading, and BOOM! Kernel panic. I had successfully downloaded the WRONG version right before, so I don't think the download was the problem. It hadn't even completed, anyway. The wireless USB adapter was unplugged at the time, so I don't think that was the problem. I read somewhere that faulty RAM can sometimes lead to recurring kernel panics, and I installe new RAM recently, also. Should I remove it?

Would the worst case scenario be that I have to remove the new ram, new drive, and fresh reinstall leopard on the old?

It also had a kernel panic while in safe mode, while I was doing nothing at all, nothing special connected other than speakers, a monitor, and an apple keyboard/mouse . Faulty ram?

Actually, there was a flash drive I was using to get the SECOND kernel panic's info, because I was in safe mode, but that hardly matters, right?

Oh yes, RAM can cause tons of KPs, remove the new & test.

    Or...

Should I remove the new ram and then download the program and run, or download/run before removing? Im guessing run before removing, but I'm afraid it will KP (thanks for the shortcut) in the middle! Oh well, I'll go for it.

Never mind. Remember said it found an error. Something strange also happened. I have 1.25 GB of ram installed, "About This Mac" backs me up,  but it only searched 930 MB. And found the error. I'm now pretty sure it's the ram that the problem. Was this a one time faulty ram thing, or will it happen even if I return the ram and get a replacement?

Well, I removed the offending RAM and ran Remember again. Although it's not finished yet, (it takes longer than I expected!) it definitly got past what was holding it back before (which was at the very beginning, it's near the end now.) . There's the same occurence of it saying I have less RAM than I do, but maybe that's normal.

Thank you for helping me... AGAIN! I was really worried that I had somehow corrupted both my hard drives by trying to clone the one.. (Again, I'm not a big computer person!)

    Whew, great news, thanks!

Good thing you mentioned the RAM, I didn't think of asking.

Good RAM should be OK, but we want to make sure your good drive is still good, as bad RAM can mess it up.

Yes, at least Verify the Hard Drive, then Repair Permissions if it's OK.
