I have had the hardest time making this work. I know I can transfer the library to an external HD and have iTunes "see" it from there because iTunes will allow me to tell it where the library is, but everytime I attempt this it fails. iTunes on the Mac can never "see" the library even with everything connected and working correctly. iTunes has eaten almost my entire iMac HD and I need to move it, but it just won't let me do it.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

How did you move your collection?

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
