I am unable to locate any files. Now have 2200 grey exclaimation marks!! The itunes media file has a handful of tracks I deleted a few weeks ago and nothing else. The MAC I am using is backed up with Time Machine but there is no trace on them on there either. I took my MAC to an Apple store yesterday but they too were confused and unable to offer any solution. Wondering if I have a virus and what steps to take to ensure MAC is clean before starting again!

Viruses/Malware are almost nonexistent on Macs and  I have never heard of one which would do what you are seeing. Forget virus as the first thing when something goes wrong on your Mac. If you have a true virus you'll be famous as the first one in over 10 years.

Have you used Spotlight to see if the files are anywhere else on your computer?  What you see in iTunes is a listing of what iTunes thinks you have with reference to a location indicator for a track files.  If the files are moved, or folder renamed, iTunes suddenly no longer sees the files where it thinks they should be and gives you a !  2200 files. Did your computer suddenly gain tens of GB free overnight?
