Chat bubble in Messages Contact list

When I start a new message in Messages, I type in some characters in the To: field, and a list pops up with all my contacts that start with those characters. It looks like any contact in my address book that has an email address or phone number shows up with the imessage option, even if they don't have iPhones.

A couple of my contacts who do have iPhones have a little blue chat bubble next to their number.  But other contacts who also have iPhones don't have this little bubble.  So I'm not sure what the bubble is trying to tell me.

With the contacts that have iPhones, but not the bubble, if I enter their number in  Messages on my phone, the Send button turns blue to send them an iMessage.  So their numbers are in Apple's imessage database.  So that's apparently not what triggers the presence or absence of the bubble in the desktop app.

Does anybody know what that little bubble means?

    HI

The closest I can get with this is that Messages seems to learn which contact you have made and then identify which IDs can be iMessaged.

It seems to know which are Apple IDs (of course not all may have been registered with/for iMessages yet so some may not show up).

To some extent the same is true of iPhone Numbers (you don't really know who is ruinning iOS 5).

    Ok.

I had not played with mine quite that much.

I can see that your last post would sort of cover what I was interpreting and "learning" as the list got shorter on some occasions.
