Thanks for the commment I indeed do have the Western Digital software on my Mac. Good I haven't brought the letter to the mailbox. I will make it dependent of the result after uninstalling den WD programme.

Yes, I have. But it can't be a solution to do this every time you reboot your Mac.

I am so tired of dealing with this issue. Finally someone from Apple should take responsibility for this

    and fix it.

Sorry, but it seems you are not talking about the same fix

It is permanent, not broken after each reboot

You should read my previous post, I updated it to clarify what I meant

Now I am up to the recent development in this post.

Julien, you saved my day! It seems it was this Western Digital software that caused the bug from the beginning.

I could have spared 5 months of being mad about and hours of trying to fix this issue.

Funny that right before sending my angry letter to Apple, the whole problem got finally solved for my case.

That proofs you can't even trust software that is part of a third party product bought at the Apple Store.

I hope that all the other users having this issue can also fix it simply by uninstalling this crap from Western Digital.

And as a side effect it spared me the money for my letter to the USA.

I am pretty sure you have to be lucky to get the right person on the phone when you call the support to get the info about this fix.

    Glad this helps

BTW, I am not the one providing this solution, it's juliefromfederal from this forum

    Congrats to her !

I sent an email to WD to telle them about this issue.

Also working here after the WD software was removed from my Mac Mini. It's now updating with no problem on my MacMini!

It's not working for me I'm afraid. Removed WD Smartware last night using the uninstall option. When I booted this morning I did nothing, just waited for TM to start the first back up of the day. Good news No error-1 message but I've been stuck on preparing back up for an hour.

If you did not backup for a long time this could be normal

You should leave it alone to see what happens

Any message in the system console ?

Hi, thanks for this. I waited, and waited and it worked eventually. So, I rebooted again: my external volume mounted automatically (from users and groups) and the backup volume mounted when needed, backed up, and dismounted. It seems to be working and I checked that the backup was pink in TM, and it was. Still a bit skeptical as the sparsebudle has been renamed to .../my book-1/... which was muted as a significant problem in the past but it worked so i'll try to relax.

    Thanks for all the advice

I too, found success with ...

    1. navigating to my Time Capsule's "Disks" ...

    2. unchecking the "Enable File Sharing" option ...

    3. updating Time Capsule ...

    4. rechecking the same "Enable File Sharing" option ...

    5. and updating one more time ...

    6. rebooting my MacBook Air had no effect.  The "Shared" devices continued to work.

I suppose that as so many of us had the problem on one of our Macs and not another, we should have realised that it was machine specific and therefore something to do with software other than Time Machine. Doh! Sorted now, anyway.

    Hi everybody !

Like many others the WD. Plists daemon launch files delete at first,

and the WD. software uninstall in a second time solved the problem.

What I have some difficulties to understand,

    is :

1°) that WD external disks are recomended

by Apple in its Apple Store.

2°) WD. is providing Hard Disks to Apple ->

My own Imac inner built in HD. is a W.Digital so ...

I think there should be some tech chek-up

between Apple and its 3rd party main providers before

    a new OS release.

And really Apple should have been a bit more

helpfull in that saga lasting since last October.

Thanks to "JULIEFROMFEDERAL" the user who forwarded the Apple Care

    tip on this forum.

    Jean.

    Still an Apple-Addict anyway !

    P.S.:

Uninstalling WD. Software doesn't cause any trouble

carrying on using my external "Mybook" WD.

    A little extra information :

On the contrary of what many people believe,

my WD. Mybook external disk (direct firewire connection with my Imac)

is taken in the TimeMachine / TimeCapsule backups of my Imac,

and Restore is working fine to !

There might have developed a bit of a confusion about the issue.

It never was a problem with the WD drive itself.

The issue seems to have been caused by a little programme that comes with the drives and was installed by many users.

This programme makes more or less nothing but making it possible to change certain properties of the label on the front of the external drive. Like inverting the label etc.

This little useless programme is appearing the be in charge of the issue with the time machine.

Not installing or uninstalling this nonsense application solved or avoided the problem for many of the users here.

My WD external drive never had any problem running with my Mac. So I can recommend it without any restrictions.

I do agree with you !

The point is also that when you first install and set up your WD disk,

and you are new to it, if you listen to WD doc and Hot line people

(The two or three different I had on the phone in those days honestly did not know

a bit about Mac Os !) It looks necessary to install this software

to have your disk running correctly with the Mac.

To be fully honest with you,

after the solution to this TC/TM WD isssue was found,

I restaured all my Itunes music folder (300 CDs ..)

to my Imac built in HD,

fearing the WD disk wouldn't work corectly anymore without

this silly software as you say.

I also agree with you that this WD disk by itself always worked fine.

But let's not forget (whose ever fault it can be),

the glitch showed up with 10.7.2 Os release.

    Jean.
