Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

Upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 today.  I have never encrypted backups.

I now cannot restore my iPhone backup as a password (which I have never set) is required.  I keep a list of all  my passwords in an encrypted file on my computer including my iTunes password.

None of my paswords work. From the above I take it that the password that has been applied is a long since changed password from my iTunes account, set literally years ago.

I have lost months worth of photos of my son growing up and am absolutely heartbroken.

My first Mac was an SE and took a Powerbook 190 to me to University. I stuck with Apple through thick and thin. I feel totally let down. You expect this from Microsoft but the whole point of buying a Mac is that this sort of thing didn't used to happen.

I guess when I retire my 3GS in a couple of months, I'll be buying an Android phone then?  I cannot imagine giving Apple money ever again after this.  Data is just data but when the very means of backing it up sabotages your means of retrieing it...  I despair.

I know this is going to sound absolutely unhelpful, but did you read my comment on what worked for us?

Has anyone ever used your computer besides you to log in to mail or facebook or something like that? We were baffled and astounded when the password that worked for us was not even one my eldest daughters passwords. It was a password my middle daughter used for her facebook. In our case we were syncing to my eldest daughters new laptop which my middle daughter had never ever used. But they had previously shared the desktop computer.

That's how crazy this issue is. Itunes had just taken a random password off the old computer and attached itself to it.

I'm really surprised at how long this issue has been going on without a word from Apple. I can only hope they fix it in an upcoming release. As a parent with a katrillion pictures of my kids, I feel your pain.

Ok, I tried all of the suggestions, email passwords, facebook passwords, old itunes password, passcodes, partial etc.  I tried downloading iBackup bot, along with a few other things.  I was able to restore from my old iphone, but not a backup from my old ipod.  What finally worked is what was mentioned about entering a random password, clicking ok, removing the ipod from the computer for 5 seconds with itunes still up, then plugging it back in.  Maybe this will help someone else too.

Lost a whole afternoon on this to no avail. Trying various trick mentionned in this thread but nothing works.

If I don't recover all my contacts, calendar and all very soon I swear I'll never buy an Apple product again.

There was very important (job related) data in that phone. I took the risk to update the firmware in order to be able to install an app. Because I trusted Apple and knew a backup would be made, I moved forward with this and now I'm screwed.

After an update of my iPhone 4 iTunes asked me to enter a password! I also never set up a password for backups. I spent 6 hours on trying the trick mentioned above. I also tried the elcomsoft password breaker metioned above. But thank you for your contributions here, it helped! I tried even the access password from my bank account app (Sparkasse App - German Bank). I am sure I never used this password before for anything. This password was dedicated for my bank app. iTunes took this password to encrypt my backups. I can't believe it!

But I am so happy. Thank you for giving me the hint to enter all passwords I ever used for my iPhone. Even that one for my bank app. I would never except that.

If Apple somehow have access to all our other passwords lik eyour bank account password, this looks like a major security issue.

This is unnaceptable. I'm done with Apple.
