My iPod disappears when I plug it to iTunes, but still charges?  I checked "disk utility" and my iPod still doesnt appear.  I have the iPod classic 80 gb and I have only been able to charge for the last couple of months.  A few months ago I had to reset my iPod to Mac version because I had originally set it up as a PC version.  Please help!!

What happens if you connect the iPod to your Mac in Disk Mode?  Does it stay mounted long that way?  Use this article for instructions on getting your iPod into Disk Mode.

    Thank you for responding B-rock,

I have tried to put my iPod into disk mode and I was successful, however just like before Itunes recognized Dan's iPod and within seconds Dan's iPod disappeared.  I dont know how to get it out of disk mode now but overall still experiencing the same issue.

Early today I turned the light on and I discovered luminous piece in the connector piece of the iPod.  I noticed that the luminous piece only shined on half of the connector.  I tried to see what it was, grabbed the tip of a charp knife and I was able to pull the piece of aluminum out of the connector.  I recognized that the piece came from gum wrapping, so it was very thin and it mold into the the iPod connector.  I put gum packs in my bag all the time and I tend to find very small scraps once in a while.

Once I removed the gum wrap out, I tried to plug the iPod in hoping that the problem was solved but the iPod still disappears out of iTunes within seconds of plugging it in.  Still manages to charge my iPod though...

Do you have another 30 pin USB dock connector cable you could test out to help rule the possibility of a damaged/faulty cable?

Yes B-rock, I believe I have tried it all.  Brand new connector doesnt work on any of the USB docks.  Also, the iPod does NOT charge when plugged into a wall.  I can only verify the iPod charging when I plugged into a USB dock from my iMac.  There has to be a solution to this problem because iTunes does recognize the iPod, the real question (problem) is why is iTunes and iMac booting the iPod shortly after recognizing the device?

The reboot usually happens when there is faulty or damaged connection between the device and your Mac.  Have you check to make sure the iPod's docking port is clean and clear or debris as well?

Yes, thats what I previously stated.  I found a piece of aluminum from a gum wrap.  I was able to take it out but maybe some of it has blended too well within the lines of the docking port.  I usually keep my iPod in my gym bag.  Is there a way to safely clean the docking port myself?

You can use a can of compressed air to try and blow it out. Also try and find a small brush with bristles and try and run it through the connector.

If nothing else, the port may be beyond repair and need replacement.

hmmmm do you know if it would be expensive to replace the port? I might as well just buy a new iPod for the price of repairing.

It depends on where you have the iPod serviced.  The Apple route will be the most expensive. See here for pricing: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/

There are numerous third party service centers out there you will actually swap out the battery part for a lot less versus just swapping the unit out for a refurbished one as Apple does. You may have to Google for "iPod repair" and you should get a ton of results to work with and research on before making your final decision.
