Hi

One Mac connects to TC but TC has lost connection to the Internet.  BUT the other 2 Macs connect to the same TC and TC IS connected to Internet. 

What the????

I compared the two Airport Utility..... 

Non-connected Mac: the Internet light is amber, Time Capsule light is green.

Connected Mac: Both are green.

 

The information in the AirPort pop up windows on the two Macs are identical. Router address, DNS servers, etc.  Except one Internet connection reports "Connected"  the other "Disconnected"

 

Time Machine is bridged to router. (TC to Router to Internet).

 

Mac that won't connect is my wife's ....so HELP meeeeeee please!!!!!

    It might help to reset the connection settings on the Mac with the probem using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:

     

    1) Use the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu bar item to turn AirPort/Wi-Fi off, then on again.

     

    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu.

     

    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort/Wi-Fi item from the left column, then add it back.

     

    4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.

     

    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort/Wi-Fi connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".  Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.

     

    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.

     

    These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.  Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.  If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.

    Thanks for the help William, but it was to no avail.

     

    As usual I probably didn't describe our problem correctly. So I'll try again.....

     

    My wife's Mac DOES WiFi connect to the AirPort. In fact it still does Time Capsule back-ups.

     

    The predicament is that her Mac is our only Apple device that AirPort is not allowing access to the modem or the modem is not allowing her to connect to the Internet. I don't know which at this point.

     

    Our set up:

    AT&T U-verse modem is hard wired to the AirPort and AirPort then WiFi connects to the computers, printers & iPhones. All have access to the Internet BUT HER'S. 

     

    Looking at Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility

    Her Mac;

    Shows the Airport case and below is a 'green dot Time Capsule'

    Then a line up to the World Internet symbol and below it is an 'amber dot Internet'

     

    The other computers the 'Internet dot' is green.

     

    Placing the curser on the symbol produces a pop out window.

    On her's the Internet pop out info window has the same router address, DNS servers and domain name as the other Macs, except 'connection Disconnected' where the other Macs display 'Connected'

     

    The Time Capsule pop out window also has the same info as the other Macs except the wireless clients are different.

     

    So I'm still floundering around.

    I did understand your problem description.  Sometimes the procedure I described such problems, but not always.

     

    In the chance that it will should you more information, try this:  Launch Network Utility.  Click on the "Lookup" tab.  Enter a simple URL in the field such as "www.apple.com" (without the quotes).  Click on the "Lookup" button.  In the panel below you should see some results.  If things are working correctly, you should see some information in the "Answer Section".  If you see a "Host not found" message, then DSN lookup is failing.  If not, then click on the "Ping" tab.  Enter "www.apple.com" (without the quotes) in the field and click on the "Ping" button.  If you see lines mentioning something like "64 bytes . . .", then things are working normally.

     

    I'd like to know what you experience when you try these things.

    Well, Network Utility resulted in:

    Trying "www.apple.com" ;;connection timed out; no servers could be reached.

     

    Just for grins I did the ping thing. 

    Ping; cannot resolve www.apple.com; Unknown host.

     

    So DNS lookup is failing.....?

     

    I went to:

    System Preferences>Network> (Advanced) (DNS)

    DNS Servers:          Search Domains:

    192.168.1.254           gateway.2wire.net

     

    I remember going to this location early in my floundering and found it blank. At that time I then manually entered the above.

    Which is the same as is on my Mac.

     

    I've been comparing my Mac Network and AirPort stuff against her Mac...I'm at a loss as what to do....

    Yes.

    System Preferences>Network> (Advanced) (DNS)

    DNS Servers:          Search Domains:

    192.168.1.254           gateway.2wire.net

    That only works if 192.168.1.254 is the address of your router and your router is willing to forward DSN requests to the Internet.  Try these values instead: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.  These are the address of Google's DNS servers.  You shouldn't have to use those, but if those work, you may want to investigate how to implement a permanent fix.

    Went to System Preferences>Network> (Advanced) (DNS) and replaced 192.168.1.254 with 8.8.8.8.  Launch Network Utility.  Click on the "Lookup" tab.  Enter "www.apple.com". Clicked on the "Lookup" button.

    Ta-Da!!

    Same result.

    Trying "www.apple.com" ;;connection timed out; no servers could be reached.

    Rats

    Then, just to torture myself, I tried 8.8.4.4. Same result.

     

    How does one fix this failing?

    Just a couple of suggestions.. and requests..

     

    without any disrespect to William... !!

     

    In the 3 Macs you have.. 2 that connect .. one that doesn't.

     

    All are connected by wireless?

     

    All run lion?

     

    Can you open the system profiler.. in the ones that work and the failed one.. go to airport and note the cards used in each.

    eg..

    Interfaces:

    en0:

      Card Type:    AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8E)

      Country Code:    FR

    Something strange has happened even in my network due to drop out of adsl I was forced to change to 3G.. and now I find I am in France.. (actually Australia).

     

    Is there any major difference between the 3 Macs.. particularly could one be using a different wireless chipset.. Apple have changed between broadcom and atheros.. and we have found issues. Also which version TC do you have?

     

    Can you plug the Mac that doesn't work into the TC by ethernet.. does the internet now work?

    ie can we actually point the finger at wireless. Or is it some more general networking issue.

     

    The next one is a pain.. sorry.

    Can you reset the the TC to factory and change all the names.. use short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.

     

    Lock the wireless channels.

    This may not seem important but the same issue afflicts the iphone that it can reach the TC but not outside world.. locking the wireless fixes it.

     

    Another less painful experiment.

    The wireless on uverse modem .. if that is still turned on, can you cannot to that.. if the TC is in bridge you will still be able to reach the TC even connected directly to the modem.

    First, Thanks for the suggestions,

    Well took me awhile, but no success.  Believe I did all the above.  The 3 computer's Software Versions, Interfaces and Network Information all appear copacetic. Reset the Time Capsule and 2Wire modem, twice...no sucess. Log on directly to the 2wire. The other 2 Macs get to the internet, my wife's Mac.. nope, crap!

    Need more help... Could her Mac have a hardware problem of sorts?

    Take it to the genius and see if anything is wrong.

     

    How old and did you clean install lion or just do upgrade??

    Went to genius. They proved it wasn't the AirPort Card but a software glitch.

    Purged computer and loaded Lion. All fixed!

    So a clean install cured it.. thanks for giving the feedback because I think it is important that people see the normal upgrade process can still leave a computer in unworkable state.. Clean install of OS is always the way to do things.
