I have iPhoto 9.2.3 running on a Macbook (08) with the latest version of Lion. iPhoto will open up and without any actions on my part quit unexpectedly. I have openned it with my ususal library (>5000 pics) and with a new empty library and it fails in both cases.

Any suggestions?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Thanks for the input, however, iPhoto still quits unexpectedly. This time it did not display my events, it opened with the clock wheel in grey-black panel for about 30-45 seconds then quit.

Make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

    Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Select the options identified in the screenshot

    Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

      1. Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
      2. Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
      3. Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
      4. In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
      5. Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    That doesn't work for me.

Log into another user account on your Mac and try iPhoto there. If it fails boot into  Safe Mode and try there.

If iPhoto crashes in both of those situations then a reinstall of the system seems indicated.

Your problems appears similar to that in this topic: iPhoto crashes at start

Thanks again, however, Fix 1 did not solve the problem. I moved on to Fix 2 and tried to rebuild the library, but each event failed. I tried "continue" and the same failure, I tried "Skip" and the it moved on but the next event failed. Were these fixes, to be done after your original suggestion, because I recoverd the files I deleted to get iPhoto to at least open before failing.

Also, when I finally quit the re-build, iPhoto started up with the partial rebuilt library, and it quit unexpectedly even after it said it repaired inconsistencies.

It sounds like your library is damaged beyond normal repair.  With that in mind you may want to do the following:

Start over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.

    2.  Open the library package like this.

    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

    4. Drag the subfolders in the Originals folder (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the entire Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Your current library will remain untouched for further testing if so desired.

Once again, thanks for the information, however, this is failing also. What is interesting is that iPhoto fails without adding anynew files. I tried adding Master as described at iPhoto quit. I tried letting iPhoto open and do nothing and it failed unexpectedly with just the "To get Started with iPhotos" card displayed in the iPhoto window. I am throroughly confused - this seems like an application problem maybe with some support file.

Do you get a message asking if you want to send a crash report?  If so copy the first 50 lines and post them here.

KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE is almost always data related. But we've tried all of the tricks related to bad data, i.e. damaged library.

Boot into  Safe Mode and see if iPhoto will open and function there. If it doesn't a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,

Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally.

I have tried the safe mode and iPhoto still crashes, so I will have to go through the process you suggested. Unfortunately iPhoto11 came as a download from iTunes. How can I trigger another download from them? Or do I have to load the original iPhoto 9 from 2008 before I can do that?

You should be able to find iPhoto listed under the purchases section of the Mac App Store.
