iTunes cannot backup the iPad because it is locked with a pass code when connected with synch cable

My new iPad cannot synch with iTunes when connected with a USB synch cable. The iTunes pop up the message: "iTunes cannot backup the iPad ... because it is locked with a pass code ..."

However, when synch over wifi, it does not require me to enter the pass code to unlock it to synch. Is this normal? How can I disable this?

 

More detail:

We have 4 i-devices at home. iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, and new iPad. They all run ios 5.1 and all have pass code. When I synch any of them over wifi (initiate synch from iTunes while device is locked), everything works fine. No warning, no error. When I synch them via USB synch cable, the new iPad does not synch. It gives me the above error and requires me to enter the pass code to unlock the device. Once I've done that, it started to synch properly.

 

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks
