The FireWire cable is not needed if you don't use the display's FireWire ports. The USB cable is needed for the display's USB ports and for cimputer control of brightness. The display should work with just the DVI (and power) cable.

I initially had the problem that the MBP 2012 was not recognizing the mid-2000s 23 cinema display, despite the proper (mini display port to DVI) adapter. The solution I found was to use my older Mac to set the display's resolution lower (960x600). Then the laptop recognized the display normally, and the display functioned at higher resolution normally as well. I hope that helps someone.
