iTunes, App Store, Safari, Mail not responding on Macbook Pro- whats wrong and what can I do?

 

Macbook Pro 2GHz Intel Core i7 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 running Lion 10.7.3

    Reboot. If necessary, hold down the power button until the machine shuts down.

    Haha, I appreciate the simple help. This has been an ongoing issue, no rebooting, force quitting, or system/software update has fixed anything! Thanks!

    What exactly happens when the applications stop responding?

     

    The ones you mentioned all access the Internet. Are any applications affected that don't access the Internet, such as TextEdit?

    My iTunes was in the mini player the last time it worked, so all I can see from it is that it's trying to connect to the iTunes store. Safari just won't load a page past my homepage (sometimes not even that), the app store never loads at all, and Mail will not connect to my email accounts. All of these programs have to me forced quit. However, I do use Firefox and it never gives me a problem. I'm at a loss!

    Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network ▹ Advanced ▹ Proxies. If any proxies are selected, deselect them, apply your changes, and try again. You must apply the changes before they take effect. You don’t need to disable passive FTP mode.

    No proxies are selected. And to answer an earlier question- All other programs are working, just not the ones I've listed

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

     

    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

     

    Step 1

     

    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

     

    Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.

     

    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

     

    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?

     

    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

     

    Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

     

    Step 2

     

    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

     

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

     

    • Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    • Press the power button.
    • Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    • Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

     

    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

     

    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

     

    Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

     

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

     

    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    I attempted to follow the steps that you listed above but the "set up a guest account" help page would never load. so here's what I did:

     

    Logged off of my administrator account and on my user log in page, i clicked on "Guest". this gave me some notice that said my computer would reboot and just launch Safarir by itself for the "Guest" account. That worked. Safari worked fine on the Guest account. I signed back into my administrator account and all the programs are working properly.  BUT, I'm sure there is still an issue.  I bought the computer in August and its been giving me these problems since about October. I dont have time to give up my computer for weeks and send to Apple so I've just tried getting by (I've done well) but i REALLY just want my computer to work properly.  The issues sometimes seem fixed, but the same problems always come back.  Is there any other kind of test I can do or anything to figure out what the root issue is? Thanks SO much for all your help!

    You should follow Step 2 that Linc suggested. Booting in Safe mode does some system maintenance as well.

    If I understand your response, the problem is resolved. I don't know what caused it.

    well the problem is back! things started working before i even actually tried any of the steps listed above. i still tried doing them (set up a guest account never loaded in my help menu bar, and still doesnt load when i try) i rebooted in safe mode and everything was still working just fine.  and now this afternoon, it all just stopped working again. any other ideas or tests i can run?

    I did that- i created a guest account and the problem was still happening within the guest account. iTunes was working but Safari and the App Store were still giving difficulties. I did not try Mail.
