I don't think there's any way to get them back. That's the same thing happened to me. If you have photos in your Windows Vista that used to be stuck on the iPhone then it is necessary.
Another option would be and this is just my opinion but to turn on Photo Stream from the Photo's Section in Settings. Just a precaution if syncing with iTunes will permenantly delete them.
And if you want to disable the syncing the Photos and deleting them, try going to the Photo's section in iTunes for Windows and take off that check mark from the top and then a pop-up will show, and click "Keep Photo's".

This really is something Apple needs to simplify.
Contacts lost, photos lost, shazam tags lost....no simple way to recover them.
"restore backup" doesn't work as well now that iCloud exists.
It's a *major bug* and I'm ******.
There is definitely a way to get them back, provided that you or iTunes made a backup prior to syncing. You can try using iPhone Backup Extractor to check the backups, it will also let you extract the files within. There is still a chance to get your photos back, so hope this works out.
I had the same problem. Sent a bunch of my pics to the trash can never to be seen again. I used a program called Wondershare Data Recovery Undelete to restore them...only thing is you'll need a PC. Plug your iPhone into your USB drive and it will appear on the left of the program...a bunch 'deleted' files will appear on the right. Restore the ones you want from there.
