My Powerbook which was running 10.5 has had a major headache so I put in an install disc and wiped it clean to give it a fresh start in life !

However when I now want to install using my disc for 10.5 it requires that I have 10.4 already installed !!

Don't have the install discs for 10.4 !

How does one get hold of them ?

Does Apple make legacy software available online ?

That would be so helpful.

Any advice ?

Thanks

Your only hope is to find a black Tiger retail disk on eBay or Amazon.

If that is truly the special upgrade disc that requires another OS version be installed first then you cannot use general retail installer discs.  You can see if Apple still has replacement discs for your computer (much easier and cheaper -- if they have it), otherwise you will have to be very, very lucky and find exactly the right one on the used market.  However, this being a Powerbook it kind of surprises me that this would be the case. Usually installer discs that require a previous OS version be present were ones that were provided to people for free for Macs they purchased with an older OS within a certain time period of a newer OS being released.  I don't think a Powerbook ever fell into that with 10.4/10.5.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.  They may be able to provide a replacement set of discs for a fee.  These discs will be for whatever OS was installed on the computer originally, so if you have an upgraded version you will need to obtain the discs some other way.

The strange thing is I must have the discs somewhere .......

I found my Panther install discs10.3, but the Tiger ones are not where they should be.

Looking online (Ebay) people are asking silly amounts of money for 10.4 install discs.

Seems daft when all I want to do is install the 10.4 briefly so that I can install the 10.5. !

    Pretty **** irritating.

    Yes, call Apple

I just bought a hard copy of Snow Lep from them.

    They might have it....

    AHMuse11,

I'm a bit puzzled by your posts in the last 10 minutes in various forums about replacement discs.

First, can you confirm that the disc Apple sold you with 10.4 is a retail version installer disc (usually black in color and will say retail version) and not a machine-specific disc as a replacement  for an original disc?  You mention it cost $33 which is very underpriced for a retail disc, but about matches what I would expect for a replacement disc.  Replacement discs only work in a specific set of machine models which originally came with that version and will not operate as upgrade discs which is for what most people are searching.

Second, in this thread you say you bought Snow Leopard. Yes, Apple does still sell Snow Leopard, but the original poster (OP) was asking  about Tiger.

I know the poster was talking about Tiger. Since I bought a hard copy of Snow, it would warrent some effort to check and see if they have a hard copy of Tiger.

And no, my disc is not a replacement.

Apple usually does not sell any system discs other than the current version (now Lion) in its stores, and perhaps the current and previous version (now Snow Leopard) online. Once we get into third generation or older (Leopard and older) they do not sell it at all anywhere and you have to turn to third party sources.  The exception is replacement discs until they run out.

wow. Chill it was just a suggestion.

Okay, it's just that in several of the posts you made to different people you were making it sound as if Apple was now selling retail Tiger discs for $33 ("I know for a fact you can buy a hard copy of 10.4 from Apple. ").  If that had been the case it would have been valuable information and we would need to revise our recommendations.
