Apple TVPhilips are talking nonsense. The 720p output over HDMI from the Apple TV is a standard 720p signal, if it doesn't work, it's the TV set that doesn't support it. Not all TV's do support 720p

Apr 30, 2012 12:17 PM in response to Winston Churchillby A Boothroyd,This is what Philips say...
Carrie: Hello and good evening
Alex: Hello how are you
Carrie: Ok do you have a Android Fidellio Docking speaker?
Carrie: I am fine
Alex: I have 42PFL7603D/10 TV
Carrie: Thank you
Carrie: Ok you apple is not working wity your TV
Carrie: which apple product do you have?
Alex: I just bought an AppletTV, which works fine on my Panasonic TV in one room, but in our main room - your TV says Unsupported Video Format
Alex: Its AppleTV (3rd Generation)
Carrie: Ok it will mean it is not supported
Carrie: Apple products will have it's own software and will have file formats our TV will not support
Alex: that's not good!
Carrie: but can work with other brands of TV's
Alex: Philips are not compatible with Apple TV
Carrie: as it depends on the arrangement Apple have
Alex: Wow
Carrie: with certain manufacturers
Carrie: the items we make for iPod/Apple products
Carrie: are our docking systems
Alex: yes, I have a soundbar from you with the ipod connector
Carrie: They are in charge with which brands and products will work with their products
Alex: is there *no* way I can make it work with my ambilight TV then
Carrie: yes that is right
Alex: that is bad for Philips, and bad for me
Carrie: No the TV was not made to work with Apple products, however some of our TV's will work via USB with MP3 players
Carrie: as they are different type of audio product and can store normal
Carrie: support files
Carrie: OK as advised
Carrie: as IPod is an Apple product
Carrie: they have made the item with files which not all TV's can support
Carrie: and so you will need to speak with them as to why it not supported by all type of TV's

Apple TVThere are too many bits of mis-information in that conversation to go through one by one, needless to say though most of it is nonsense. What is clear is that your TV doesn't support 720p. You might try connecting the Apple TV to another TV, setting the TV resolution setting on the Apple TV to 480p and connecting it back to the Philips TV.
I doubt all Philips TV's don't support 720p, but clearly that model doesn't.

Apr 30, 2012 1:18 PM in response to Winston Churchillby A Boothroyd,Well it's wierd. My TV works with my SKYHD+ box (1080o). My panasonic works with AppleTV on 1080p, but my Philips won't. I stepped down the res even to 480 on Appletv and put it in sleep mode, connected to the Philips and still nothing. Will try swapping the cables - then an HDMI switch.
It can't be the Philips TV because it works great on 1080P with Sky. Wierd!

Apple TVThe Apple TV doesn't output 1080p. That's the point, it only outputs 720p and it appears your TV doesn't support it.

Poor Carrie doesn't seem to know what she's talking about but is probably providing scripted answers.
The OP in that transcript however says AppleTV 3rd gen so it will support 1080p as I know you are well aware.
edit - I see the 'tag' in the original question has AppleTV 2 - I never use these trendy thinsg so usually ignore them.
Maybe there's no ATV3 tag?

It could be either device.
AppleTV has over the years had various incompatibilities with certain sets but whether or nto it's Apple or the TV manufacturer's messed up HDMI implementation is hard to say.
I don't think poor Carrie understands what you are talking about - she started discussing a Fidelio dock.

Apr 30, 2012 1:35 PM in response to Alley_Catby Winston Churchill,I think they know exactly what they are talking about, but passing the buck. The part about the Apple TV 3 gives that away, they clearly understand the Apple TV 3 works because it outputs at 1080p, and that it's nothing to do with video formats.

May 13, 2012 6:25 AM in response to A Boothroydby Pendragon1,I'm having the same problem with my ATV2 and Philips Cineos TV. Every minute or so, when playing films, tv shows or TED talks via ATV, the screen goes black and silent, sometimes for up to 10 seconds and returns after a static flash, or the TV says "No video signal". Anyone got the answer? Many thanks

May 14, 2012 10:57 AM in response to Pendragon1by emeu1,Hello All,
maybe this sheds some light.
I happen to own a Philips Ambilight TV. I also own a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge (with HDMI output) and Apple MacBook Pro (early 2011 model).
The first time I connected my Thinkpad Edge via HDMI to my Philips TV, I experienced the problem that the display colors sometimes "inverted". Sometimes for only a couple of seconds, sometimes for minutes.
At first I thought the problem to be the HDMI cable so tried different ones. Didn't help. Then I used an other HDMI input on the Philips TV (mine has three). Tried all three, didn't help.
Needless to say my Thinkpad Edge had all the latest Microsoft (Win 7 64-bit) and Lenovo drivers installed.
I tried my wife's Thinkpad Edge, same problem. So it seemed to be a Philips TV problem.
However, as I didn't find a solution at Philips, Lenovo nor elsewhere on the internet, I tried my MacBook Pro.
Bought an original Apple Display Port tot HDMI connector and hooked it up to my Philips TV.
Again, same problem. Searching the internet again I found a Forum in which a Philips specialist wrote (in response to a question from a Mac Mini owner experiencing the same problem) that Philips uses a different color scheme (whatever that might be). He also gave a solution for Mac OS X. Install a display override directory and file in:
/System/Library/Displays/Overrides
Directory to be created:
DisplayVendorID-410c
File (in that directory):
DisplayProductID-0
The file 'DisplayProductID-0' contains:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist SYSTEM "file://localhost/System/Library/DTDs/PropertyList.dtd">
<plist version="0.9">
<dict>
<key>DisplayProductID</key>
<integer>0</integer>
<key>DisplayVendorID</key>
<integer>16652</integer>
<key>IODisplayEDID</key>
<data>

</data>
</dict>
</plist>
This solved the problems on my MacBook Pro.
I don't know how to install such a file on an Apple TV but maybe you can find some solution on the internet when searching which arguments:
Philips Television color scheme Apple
Kind regards,
emeu1

May 16, 2012 8:58 AM in response to A Boothroydby Sonicray,Hi!
Have you tried another HDMI cable with the Apple TV 3rd gen?. It is better to use an HDMI cable compatible with the latest standard (ver. 1.4).
According to the info. on that TV, it only supports HDMI v1.3 out of the box (the TV is 4+ years old, according to the original release date). Have you updated the software on your Philips TV? (check Philips site for updates.)
Both your TV and Apple TV do 1080p 60Hz over HDMI. So, I do not see why it would not work.

There is no such thing as an HDMI 1.4 cable, there is only standard and high-speed versions. If you come across a shop trying to sell you an HDMI 1.4 cable, you should report them to trading standards

May 16, 2012 9:26 AM in response to Winston Churchillby Sonicray,I know that the guys over at the HDMI group (http://www.hdmi.org/) don't want us to use version numbers but it makes it easy to figure out why something might not work.

May 16, 2012 9:40 AM in response to Sonicrayby Winston Churchill,You might be seeing something that I don't, however I fail to see how replacing a supposedly 1.3 cable with a supposedly 1.4 cable will help anyone. Except that is for the owner of the shop and his bank balance.
