Q: music on iphone

I don't know if this is the right place to post. I am using itunes match and playing music on my iphone. I have downloaded music from itunes match to my phone. How can I see the music I have downloaded seraptly on my phone and not confuse it with the non downloaded stuff? I need to know this as when I don't have a connection I will use that music to listen to. Is there some area of the iphone where I can see the music in my memory without going through itunes match and seeing what has been downloaded.

On your phone the "cloud" means not on your phone.

My problem is wading through my library looking for the music I have downloaded. I know what the cloud means. There does not seem to be any easy way to find the downloaded stuff but only by memory and by chance finding a missing cloud. I would think there would be some menu to show what has been download from the cloud only so you don't have to waste time sifting through you music library looking for stuff when you have no connection.

I don't have iCloud, so on your iPhone does it show you all items in the cloud even if you have have not yet downloaded them?  If so, I would think that you could create a simple smart playlist to capture what is actually loaded onto your iPhone (whether from your computer or a previous download from iCloud).  Something like "Media Kind is Music" and maybe "Bitrate > 0 kbps". The smart playlist won't update until you re-sync, but that may not be important to you if you sync often.

You could put downloaded songs into playlists with

names that would indicate downloaded music.

Not sure I how I would do that. Can you make a playlist in the iphone? It seems to defeat the purpose if you had to make it in itunes on your computer. With itunes match if you are on the go you can download from the cloud onto any of your devices. Everything works great with a connection as you have access to everything but once you go into a subway you have to rely on music in the HD. It would seem so obvious to have something to cleary differentiate from downloaded or not downloaded in a much clear easier manner.

To make a smart playlist as I described above, it would be a one-time set up while connected to iTunes.  As long as you use simple criteria as I suggested, the playlist may update without having to re-sync to iTunes ... only more complicated smart playlists require a re-sync to update.  But "Media Kind is Music" combined with "Bitrate > 0 kbps" might update on the fly.

Now, it is entirely possible that iCloud music that you have not downloaded will fit the smart playlist criteria, but I would think (hope) that the Bitrate criteria would filter them out.

I guess the next step I don't know how to accomplish. When I click on music under the iphone device and the music is all greyed over. I guess I don't know how to do what you are telling me. I guess I have to get a physical playlist in the iphone device menu and drag the music that is on my iphone into it. Not sure how to proceed or am I just over complicating things.

No problem, just need a few answers:

1- Do you manually manage your music and video content on your iPhone, or do you auto-sync music and video to your iPhone?

2- If you auto-sync, do you sync your entire iTunes library (probably not, since you're using iCloud) or do you auto-sync to a specific set of playlists and/or genres?

Well I am finding it hard for me to answer since it most likely I am new to icloud and itunes match. Icloud takes care of my mail, contacts, calender, and photos. I just added itunes match so I see no need to sync music unless I add a new playlist which I assumed goes to the cloud. Maybe I just answered my own question that a new playlist will not appear in the iphone unless I sync but I though it was automatic. Not sure what to answer. I know I don't sync my whole library because I don't need to because of itunes match/icloud

Oh that's right, if you use iCloud then you don't sync from your computer at all.  In that case, try creating such playlist in iTunes and see if it becomes available in iCloud, though I probably should refrain from advising further since I don't have iCloud experience with respect to music.

I hope you've already discovered this answer, but this may help someone with the same question. Go to Settings > Music and turn "Show All Music" to OFF.

Now only the music that is actually ON your iPhone will show up on your phone.
