Theres not really much to setup. Assuming your synths are connected to the MIDI Express already..

In Logic, make a new MIDI track. On the left hand side in the track inspector, among the parameters you'll see an option for MIDI Port and Channel. Just pick which port the track is going to, set the channel and device id and play (And be glad you never had to deal with setting up the old Environment window in Logic 5 and below).

If you really wanna get into it and have all your MIDI ports named after the synth thats connected to it, open up Audio Midi Setup, create a device icon for each synth you have and draw the cables from each device to whatever port its connected to on the midi interface's icon.

Then in Logic everytime you pick your MIDI port on your track, instead of MIDI Port 1, MIDI Port 2, etc.,

it would be labelled XV-3080, Motif Rack, and so on.. I dont think theres anyway to do this within Logic itself (you can change the labels on your audio ins and outs, but not MIDI as far as I can recall)..

If youre talking about having access to patch names and whatnot like Digital Performer and Cubase let you do, Logic doesnt use the xml patch lists everyone else does. The above steps are pretty much all there is to be done as far as MIDI.

Heres my Audio Midi Setup window for reference.

Now when I select MIDI Port 1 in Logic its named MWXT, port 2 is SR-16, etc..

I just use the environment to set up my external gear,  Roland JV-1080, Alesis QS8, Korg M3R, and a Yamaha TG55. Don't really bother with Audio MIDI setup, as long as the MIDI interface shows up there you're good to go.

Created Multi-Instruments for all of the above and divded the available channels accordingly, the KorgM3R gets channels 1-5 on MIDI Port#1, the JV gets 6-15 on the same MIDI I/O, same with the other gear on MIDI port #2. Anything done in the environment is available in the arranshows up on the arrange page. Patch lists are available for instruments created in the environment.

hehe.. I have an SR-16 too.

    Here's a shot of the M3R multi-instrument setup to receive on channels 6,7 & 8, w/patchnames.

So what am I doing wrong? I have input to my 828 but no output. everything works fine on DP7. Where do I set output of each channel strip?......so I have to manually put patch names into patchlist window ? how about Banks?

Is there a way I can do a patch dump to make patch lists..I can't imagine cutting and pasting16 baks of 127 patch names

Yeah sadly you have to cut and paste. Sound Diver did it in OS 9 but when they removed Autolink in the OS X beta it was no more. I used to have Sound Diver export my banks as a text file and would then cut and paste the banks into the patch window one bank/synth at a time.

So whats the deal with 828 getting input but the output is not routing to CHNL1&2. Where do I set the output

You're using an External MIDI Track... correct?

If not, create some External MIDI Tracks then over on the left, in the "Inspector" you can't miss it...  it reads: Port:  That should be a drop down where you've selected the port. There's pretty clear chapters on this in the manual.

As for Patch names, you can paste them from a text file, there's 14 (or is it 15?) Banks available for each Multi-instrument so you would have to use two Multi's (maybe 8 banks each) to cover all 16.

You will need to create a Multi-Instrument and start clicking around and experimenting to see all of the options.

The reason this is so Archaic is that Apple has never updated the environment and I doubt they ever will, I know Apple sees external gear as going the way of the disk/DVD/CD drives. In fact, when a new Logic comes out I bet there will be even more limited external support. Apple would be happy if we all just did things their way and forget abut all this 3rd party stuff that causes problems.

Yeh It was obvious to me apple wants to keep it all in their box...The program is geared towards making music for you....so much for the craft...BUT I still can't get any friken sound coming out...Im getting signal into my AU its showing the correct channels..it switches when I change ports to the correct modual..name and everything...the modual responds when i switch patches even though they are wrong..but still no monitoring of sound...I'm at a loss...I got this program for my sons imac and thought Id try using it on my computer

Ok so it sounds like your MIDI is working fine. Not sure why there's no sound, assuming the synths audio outs are going into the 828s audio ins. Is your 828 the original or the MKII? I haven't had an 828 since the day the MKII came out and I upgraded but iirc the original doesn't have hardware monitoring like CueMix on the MKII. You may have to actually arm a track for recording first before you'll hear it.

    Preferences/Audio/

Is software Monitoring checked? It should be.

Also, for confusion's sake, also make sure Universal Track Mode is checked.

While you're in Preferences/Audio set the I/O Buffer to 128.
