Hello, I have fcp 4.5 on 10.5.8 OS with quicktime 7.6.6.  It's starting to drop frames every few seconds, then it will start moving again with no sound.  I've tried many of the tips for dropped frames although some I'm scared to try since they sound too complicated.  Is there anything basic that I should be doing like re-installing quicktime?  is that even possible and if so, should it be the same version?  and how do i do so properly?  I also tried fcp rescue v.4 which I didn't seem to have done anything, maybe because it's been discontinued?  is there another way to trash prefs?  sorry to ask so many questions, I'm finishing up a film project and I was almost done before this happened...starting to get disheartened...thanks.

Your version of Quicktime is too new for the version of FCP you are running.  When it came out, QT 6 was the version that it worked with.  QT 7.6 is way too new, and FCP 4.5, that is Quicktime based, probably doesn't understand this version of QT.  And QT is a core system component, you can't just uninstall it and install an earlier version.  You are going to have to back up your files and erase the hard drive, and install the OS again, then the apps.  You will have to stick with the version of QT that comes with that OS.  FCP 4.5 is 8-9 years old.  Best to run it on the OS that came out when it did...what is that?  Panther? 10.2? 10.3 max...

FCP 4.5 ran/runs best on OS 10.3.9 with QuickTime 6.x

FCP X...if you have an Intel Mac and are running OSX 10.7 (Lion).  But that is completely different from all the previous FCP versions, and you will need third party solutions to upgrade your project to work with it.  And it won't be perfect.

Although...that only...and I mean ONLY FCP 7.  You are running an old version that it won't work with.

The other versions have been discontinued...no longer for sale.  You might find them on eBay.  FCP 6 was the last to work on non-intel processor macs.  FCP 7 requires an Intel mac...

ugh, super sucky, today i exported a .mov quicktime file of my project to my external drive and when I opened it up to view it, my computer crashed halfway through!  does this mean i really have a quicktime problem or could it be resolved with a different version of fcp?  sounds like i probably have to reinstall the operating system and the apps...
