When ever I try to send a chat message to a listed buddy or a new buddy the message won't leave the type box. Ichat shows that I am available to other accounts, and when they send me messages their accounts show I recieve them even though I do not. I researched other peoples questions and answers but no matter how many times i change the numbers 5190 to 443, the original code takes place of 443.  Recently, about a month or so Ichat and Safari went down but I still had internet access to google chrome. Ichat was completely lost and I had to go to the Snow leopard DVD to get Ichat back. Did this have anything to do with Ichat not working now? Please help me for Ichat helps me connect to my family far away from me. Thank you and please respond.

    Hi,

After reinstalling iChat from the Disk did you download and Install the COMBO version of the last OS update you did ?

iChat gets it's updates in the OS Updates.  (not every time but enough to be important).

iChat needs to "Match" the OS level.

Snow Leopard at OS 10.6 (base install)  is iChat 5.0 in effect.

At OS 10.6.3 iChat gets to iChat 5.0.1

By the time the OS is at OS 10.6.8 iChat is at version 5.0.3

To Change the Ports in iChat that account has to be fully Logged out.

In iChat > Preferences > Accounts select the account in question

In the Account Info tab on the right deselect the "Use this Account" check box

All the info in the Server Settings should now be dark text and editable.

As you had an issue with the Internet connection also go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and drag it to the Trash.

This .plist hold the info about how you are Logged in at any one time.

If the Internet Connection failed then this info will not agree with what the AIM servers are holding your account at  (from their point of view you went Of Line).

Hi Ralph thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. So I ran a software update on the computer and it had no updates available for anything, especially not ichat. The internet connection is working perfectly and I would like to try disabling the port but I was wondering what the effects would be? Would it completetly get rid of the one account I have on ichat? Thank you,

    Hi,

iChat Updates are (when they occur) part of the OS Updates.

If you Reinstall iChat from an Install disk then iChat is likely to be several versions behind the OS.

Because the OS update(s) have been run, the OS keep Receipts of what it has Updated and it does not know you have gone behind it's back and changed something.

Therefore just running Software Update will not find anything.  (on two counts, 1) because iChat updates are not identified as separate items and 2) the OS thinks it has done that bit)

You need to find, download and Install the required version for you.

It is better that you use the Combo version.

The COMBO 10.6.8 version is Here

This Users Tip tells you this and how to reinstall using Pacifist which also needs you to "run the COMBO"  afterwards.  (the Users Tip is more detailed than the "Easy Way " I explained here).

I don't think you need worry about disabling the Port (I am curious as to which Port though).

There can be benefits in deleting and re-adding an account in iChat is some situations.  However in this case I don't think it will get to the cause of the issue.
