It's my understanding that MobileMe is being turned off and everything must be moved to iCloud or be lost, but apparently you can now move to iCloud without upgrading to Lion. (https://www.me.com/move/)
I'm not sure how this works or if it helps you or not. I'm still learning about it.

Thanks David, I'm not sure that you can use iCloud without being uber-up-to-date.
I followed your link and clicked that my devices are NOT compatable and IT GOT ME.
Seems I have now subscribed and all my data will be moved on June 30th..Now it just gives me info on how to upgrade my computers. THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANTED!!
Basically, I don't want ANY of its flashy new 'pushy' features, I just want to retain my email address which I've been paying through the nose for for the last ten years or so.
This is quite clearly the single most irritating update Apple have ever initiated. We use Apple computers for their simplicity yet here we seem to have a fair bit of confusion.
What are the alternatives? A PC? I'd rather shoot myself.

If you have now migrated to iCloud from MobileMe, you can still use your email account without using any of the rest of the iCloud features. Indeed you can't use any of the features unless you are using Lion.
To use your iCloud mail account, delete your current account settings from mail preferences and add them back using the Mail Server Information

OK. I'm ok but my wife (seperate email address but still a mobile.me) uses a new iPhone 4S and an iMac which doesn't fulfil the requirements for Lion.
How is she going to be able to continue using her email after June 30th without a new desktop computer?
Never mind email, this is blackmail.

As I said previously, if you are using a computer that has pre Lion software installed on it you can use your email account once upgraded to iCloud by following the instructions I gave you.
