Possibly an extension. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
And try troubleshooting third party plugins > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info.
If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
And try disbling "Block pop-up windows" in Safari > Preferences > Security

Thanks for the quick reply. I've tried everything you wrote now, however the problem remains.
One thing I've noted though is that the page actually loads but it takes very very long time, and sometimes when the pages have been loaded the images doesn't look quite right until I hit the reload button.
I've been thinking about another thing, there are a lot of effects like round corner, shape and text shadow, can it be these that cause the problem? I still think it is very strange though that it all of a sudden stopped working and that running it on PC or iPad everything is just fine.
Another thing to add is that the computer is very new just got it like 2-3 weeks ago, and haven't hardly added anything except got Xcode, macVim, firefox and Filezilla.
Is there possibly anything else I can do to fix this?

Please post a link to a page you're having trouble with.

The problem is bugging me the most on a site I'm working on (have noticed it though on some other places but don't remember where): http://www.zyberdesign.com/jitab/
Clicking on "View Practices" or "Manage Practices" takes forever to load (I think it might have gotten slightly better since doing all the things Carolyn suggested but it is still too slow on my machine to be ok). If I would write the full path in the addressbar to either ""managePractices.html or viewPractices.html there is no problem. When I click on the item the address is visible in the addressbar so clicking reload on the addressbar makes it load directly.
If I click on any of the practices (the hexagons) shown on any of those slow loading pages the loading is ok. I tried locally to remove all the fancy styling and it speeded it up some not as fast as on my pc or iPad though... It seems as the problem is only with my iMac and Macbook . It sure feels like there is something slowing this machine down, i just can't figure it out what ...

Same here. I'd say your site needs work.

Hmm, good to know it is not just my machine that has gone crazy . It is strange though that everything worked fine when I tested it, both out on the internet and on localhost, and then, without any changes to the code the next day it is soo slow. I also did run into the problem on other sites. The pattern of slowness hasn't been as consistent as on the site I'm working on. I choose this site mostly for it being easy to remember and explain.
The other odd thing though as I keep getting stuck on is that it works fine on the iPad and the PC are you too using some kind of Mac? Googling around I read something that it could be performance issues for iPad with to much shadow and blur effects however I didn't think that would be an issue running the pages locally and on an iMac...

Thank you, it is exactly the same version of Safari and Mac OS I use. Always good to know where and if it is a common problem.

FYI: It loads fine with OS 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.2

Thank you! All input like this is really important to me.

Just updated to Safari 5.1.5 and all the pages still load quick.
Perhaps that corrupted a preference or some other cache file...

I'm seeing this issue now as well, did you ever resolve it? I've done all the fixes. It has to be my user account, if I login as another user on this machine, Safari runs fine.
Currently Being ModeratedMay 16, 2012 6:18 AM (in response to stopha6)
No, I never did resolve it (been off a couple of weeks with a bad cold) , it still is bad on iMac and MacBook, but works fine in iPhone and on iPad (which is my main target). It's interesting that it works fine when you login as another user. I think I'll try set up another user account on this machine to see how it works then if it turns out to be same as for you...

I did test to create a new user account, however, the problem still remained for me when I logged in as the new user. Seems to be a real difficult problem to solve :-(
