Hard Drive Issues

I've been having reoccuring hard drive issues on my Intel 24" 2008 iMac (500 GB)


Here is a discription of what has been happening


I have repaired the drive countless times and errors keep coming back so this is basically a summary...


My iMac was running extremely slow so I did a verify disk using Disk Utility.


DU found that I had an "invalid sibling link" so I booted from the OS X.5 install disk and ran disk utility.


DU was not able to fix the drive so I ran the fsck command and that also didn't work.


Being that I had a recent time machine back-up I decided to go to the extreme and zero out the entire drive and then do a recovery from time machine.


After my machine transfered everything from my back-up I ran DU again and the drive was error free.


24 hours later my iMac started running really slow.  Ran DU.  More errors.  This time "Incorrect number of thread records" , "invalid leaf record count" , "Volume Bit Map needs mnor repair" messages came up.


Boot from intall disk, ran DU, fixed drive, rebooted, no errors on drive.  1 day later, running slowly, checked disc, errors again...


While typing this posting, guess what?  System frooze.  Did hard restart into single user mode.  Ran fsck and it fixed a bunch of stuff.  I am convinced the errors will be back soon.


Is my drive dying?  Is this an OS X/System problem?  Interestingly enough S.M.A.R.T status has always said "Verified".


Any help would be appreciated.  My next step is to replace the hard drive.  (looks like fun in the "how to" videos :-)

    Replacing the drive is the way to go.  Given the behavior you are having your current drive can no longer be trusted.

    These have a great reputation for reliability and speed. Don't let the (relatively) low price put you off. Before the flooding in Thailand they were $55. I just bought one on the recommendation of someone with very advanced skills.

    I favor 1TB and 2TB Western Digital blacks.  I've had good luck with WD's -- their blacks and also previous models on previous machines.

    It sounds like you're on the right path by getting the hard drive replaced. You mentioned that the SMART status reported that it was verified. Were you using Disk utility to read the status? If you'd like a detailed report listing all of the SMART logging data and the errors that have been encountered to date then I suggest download a copy of SMART Utility from Volitans Software and use the demo mode to review the logs. You may find that your drive has quite a few hard errors, but it just hasn't passed the threshold yet to report as failing.

    Honestly, I would not continue to use the drive for much of anything until you can safely back up the data on it. With some of those errors it is only a matter of time before the drive locks and the information will not be able to be recovered without a lot of expense.


    Get that external drive today and start backing up before worrying about the current drive! I'd hate to see you lose your data!

    Heh.   Looks like you switched over in time.  Sounds (pun intended) like the bearing failed or you had a head crash.  Either way the drive is toast.
