when you say they dont open, what does happen? Does it allow you select them in the Open File Browser Dilaog?
Have you checked the Log files to see if any info is available there as to why they don't open?

When the files are double clicked or opened from within motion the dialogue states that they aren't compatible documents. Even though the file icon is the motion icon.
And yes they are viewable in the file browser dialogue.
The logs have no information on the files as there is no error being logged.
thanks for at least asking questions

so I can confirm that the file wont open in Motion 5.0.3. I looked at the logs via Console app, and it showed that motion was having a problem parsing a specific bit of the file. <scenenode id=20>. So I opened the file up in TextEdit and couldnt see anything obviously wrong with it ie no ending tag </scenenode> or something, so I just deleted it! saved it and then it opened in Motion. There's bound to be something missing but, hey it opened.
hope this helps

I'm running into the similar problelm.
I had a 4.0 legacy project that I tried to open in 5.0.3 and it kept crashing the application. So I opened the project on my laptop, but was unaware that it was 5.0.2. Project opened without any problems and I resaved as a 5.0 file. Went back to my desktop and my 5.0.3 app wouldn't open the file, given me the totally useless message that "This file cannot be opened".
During the interum, I udpated by Motion app on my laptop to 5.0.3 and now my laptop can no longer open either the legacy file (crash) or the recently saved 5.0.2 document ("Can't open" error).
How can I fix this?

I think adam led the way on this very well.
Looking at the Console as you try to open the motion file. Console is located in the utilities folder on your apple. From there you should be able to see the error occur real time.
Once found you should be able to open the motion document in text and remove that item from the file. Just delete that text. It will remove the layer from the file, but it will open.
In my case it was a text layer in motion.
Let me know if I can assist further.

Thanks for the help.
I ran console and found two errors. One was related to text "<text>Blah Blah Blah</text>" and a parsing error. I delted all references of the text (though I couldn't find anything wrong with the tags) and tried to open. Still get the same error but I also get the "parsing error" pop up in Console.
Any other thoughts?

Im not sure if this is the case - but i wasn't clear that you have to delete everything inbetween the error tags.
delete everything in between

So, because of the post above where it was noted that making these changes "deletes the layer," I just opend the doc in 4.0, deleted all the layers related to that text error, and now it is opening in Motion 5.0.3. I'm not really sure WHY it had a problem with the text since I had a master text layer that I just duplicated about 20 times, but who knows!
Anyway, it is now opening minus that one layer. Annoying but not a project killer.
Thanks for the help!
