I downloaded Lion from the App store to upgrade from Snow Leopard.  After the dowload the display suggested 30 minutes to install.  It actually took over 2 hours????

Any ideas as to why it would take so long?

I'm hoping it is a sign of a failing hard drive.  I feel I can replace the HD myself without taking it to the Apple store.

To those in the know do you think it's a failing HD?

thanks

Dennis

You can quickly check the SMART (Self-monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) log status of your hard drive by running the SMART Utility application from Volitans software in the demo mode. The application will display a passed, failing, or failed status and then list all of the logged errors. If the drive passes then you can run the Disk Utility application found in the Applications/Utilities folder to verify the file structure.

Are you sure that the slow download wasn't simply the result of a varied or slow internet connection?

The Lion download is a huge file, about 3.8 GB and depending on your broadband service, the time of day, and other factors, a 2 hour download is quite believable. Unfortunately the initial estimated time is often hugely innacurrate. Bottom line - your download time provides no reason to think there's anything wrong with your hard drive.

(For what its worth, I have a moderately fast broadband plan at home and it has taken me as little as 90 minutes to download Lion and as much as 2.5 hours.)

Thanks for the comeback but the dowload took less time than the installation.  Not exactly a fast download but I know that it is subject to traffic and the speed of the internet connection. But after the download the installation took approx two hours.

    thanks

It wasn't the download that took the most time.  It was the instal that took approx 2 hrs.  After it was downloaded.

I've run Smart Reporter and it has said that the drive is fine and then I've run Smart Utility and it said that the drive was failing.

I've used the Disk Utility and ran the verifiy and repair options with no exceptions.

The genius' at the genius bar have told me in the past that software inspection of the HD doesn't always show a failing HD.

    Thanks

Ah, sorry. The 30 minute install time is a rough estimate. Since Lion is being installed on top of Snow Leopard, your software, and data, there's a lot for the installer to do. If you are installing Lion onto an empty drive, 20-30 minutes is realistic. I have a MBA with SSD and I decided on a clean install for it. It was very close to 20 minutes. However when I installed it on my iMac (a 1 TB drive about 2/3 full) it took well over an hour. I'd say 70-80 minutes.

The installer has to perform a drive integrity check, it has to scan for certain plug-ins and software that will be put into an incompatible software folder, and a lot more. You've done a drive test and found nothing wrong. If over the next couple weeks you find that Lion is pretty stable, stop worrying about it. If you start getting kernel panics and software hangs, especially when the program is reading or writing data, then start thinking about the drive again.
