First thing to do is to check the iPod Hardisk health, by doing the iPod Disk Diagnostics, refer to this excellent post by tt2.
It wont fix your problem, but help us in troubleshooting, and saving a lot of frustrations, with suggestions like Reset, Restore, Re-install etc.

It toooootally helped man! After running a disk check, and erasing my iPod thru Disk Utility I was able to successfully restore my iPod and have been loading it slowly. Thanks for that article suggestion and fast resonse.
