Q: How to scan photos

I went to scan photos with new iMac OS X Lion and it says "You can't open the application Epson Scan because Power PC applications are no longer supported."  What can I do to support them?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), Epson Printer

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

There is no way to run Rosetta, the program required for Power PC applications, using OS X Lion.

Look for a newer application program that supports your Epson scanner.

Epson may provide one, and there are other programs that support a wide variety of scanners.

I use a graphics program called Pixelmator, which supports a variety of devices and interfaces.

If your computer originally came with an older version of OS X, you could potentially downgrade to OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'. If your computer shipped with Lion installed, there's no way to go backwards.

carterfromva similarly has many Epson problems with Lion, but needs Rosetta.

Consider using Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) in Parallels 7 in Lion:

I have an old Epson scanner and it works fine in Lion using the Image Capture application that comes with Lion.

Plug your scanner in and the scanner should come to life. Then launch Image Capture. Your scanner should hopefully appear in the devices list. You will not have as many options as you had with the Epson software but you should have enough of the most important options (eg: resolution)

I found Imaage Capture and used it, but it gave me a weird color instead of scanning the photo.  Tried a different photo and the same.  Added new ink to some lower ink cartridges, cleaned head, etc., etc., etc.  Did a test of colors. When it scanned I just got an oblong of pink and green and yellow.  NO photo.

    Hi jumpnjudes!

I'm a little bit confused. Why are you changing ink cartridges? That suggests to me that you're dealing with a print problem and not a scanner problem.

What do you mean by saying Image Capture gave you a weird colour? Does that mean you got a scanned image with incorrect colour? Or does it mean you got something unrecognisable?

Epson wrote that I had to do tests, see if ink levels were up, clean print head, etc.  I did ALL of that even though

I was sure it wasn't the problem.  I can print fine with my Lion computer on my Epson RX620.  I just cannot scan. I tried to post the image that I get on here, but it wouldn't post as a "picture."  It is a rectangle of pink green and yellow.  NO picture.  Haven't heard back yet from Epson.

I'm sorry to find out you had to do all those tests and play with cartridges. I agree with you in thinking that wasn't the problem but I suppose you now have some nice cartridges to print with.

If the scanner appears to be working but you only get a pink, green and yellow box, then it sounds to me like the drivers might not be compatible.

There is only one last thing that I can suggest to try, and that is to get to the scanner via the System Prefs.

1 - Plug your scanner in to your computer

    2 - Launch System Preferences

3 - Select the Print & Scan pane

4 - Select your scanner in the list of devices on the left side of the screen

5 - Click on the 'Open Scanner' button

6 - Click on the 'Show Details' button

7 - Cross your fingers and hope you get a decent preview scan...

Have you tried VueScan? Seems to cover an awful lot of Scanner drivers.

Have you downloaded and tried this Epson scanner driver?

    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supportLionDetails.jsp

Quoting from the above web page:

"ICA Scanner Driver v5.3.0 for Image Capture

    Mac OS X (v10.7 - v10.7.x), Mac OS X (v10.6)

    epson13969.dmg - 8.4MB - posted on 08/27/10

This file contains the ICA Scanner Driver v5.3.0 for Apple's Image Capture utility.

This driver corrects possible issues when using Apple's Image Capture utility with an Epson scanner."
