Oops - did I totally blow it? In my ignorance I ordered an Airport Express and the connection kit in order to play iTunes on the home stereo. I just assumed they would work with any stereo. But the only likely input I see for the stereo are the phono jacks, and the Setup Guide explicitly says not to connect to the phono jack. The stereo is a Pioneer I bought in 1994, a set with separate speakers, cassette player, CD player, and tuner/amplifier. Do I have to buy a whole new stereo, or is there some (additional) connector I could get at, say, Radio Shack, or some other basic solution I'm overlooking?

Meanwhile, the Express flashes amber, but no sense in worrying about that if I can't even connect it to the stereo.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. If I do need a whole new stereo, do you think Apple would let me return the Express and connection kit I bought from their online store? Thanks.

You can connect the Airport Express to any audio input on a sound system EXCEPT for the one labelled PHONO - that input must only ever be used to connect a turntable that plays records (remember those!).

You can cable the Airport Express to any other input - usually labelled AUX or TAPE IN or CD. This may require use of a cable with a 1/8" stereo plug on one end (to go into the Express) and right/left RCA style "phono plugs" (to plug into the back of your sound system).

If you are not connecting the Airport Express to the Internet (i.e. connecting an ethernet internet connection ) then the Airport light will always flash amber.

This is correct operation if you are only using it for streaming music.

The light only goes green when it has an internet connection.

Thanks for the advice. Tomorrow I'll try connecting it to VCR In, which seems the mot likely candidate.

"VCR IN" will do just fine as well!

It works! Thanks for the advice.

Getting off topic, but now that it works another matter has come to my attention. Can I use the Express for the stereo while I have Internet Sharing on from the iMac software base station? I had hoped to play music on the stereo while my daughter could access the Internet wirelessly, as she has been doing, on her G4 iMac via the G5 iMac software base station. But what happens I can do only one or the other. Is there a solution? Thanks again.

If you were using a "real" base station, I would tell you this problem is easily solved by configuring the Airport Express to "join" the base station's wireless network. The result would be a single wireless network that could do everything.

People have also successfully done this with a software base station (in your case you would have to set this up by running the Airport Setup Assistant on the G4 iMac). You could give it a try - but in the long run I suggest you set up a real base station with use of another Airport Express or a non-Apple wireless router.

I am having the same problems. I have my Airport Express connected to the "tape in" on my stereo but nothing is coming through, light is flashing amber as well. I thought that my Airport Extreme BS would automatically see the Express but it doesn't show-up in my Airport Utility menu. My main system is hard wired to the Base Station with an ethernet cable. I just can't figure out what I'm missing here.

Having a similar problem. Have G5 with airport express - works fine. Bought second airport express to connect stereo in other room. Can't seem to set it up. Blinks amber (but saw this is normal since there is no internet to it). Chose my network via itine, but can't seem to get it to play my itunes via stereo. The instructions with airport aren't very helpful. Anyone have help? Thanks. D

The Extreme doesn't automatically see the express. You will need to open the airport setup assistant and tell it you wish to set up a new airport base station. You will use this "new" station to join an existiing network. The setup assistant is the guy you want to find the new station, not admin. utility
