Create a playlist with the tracks in the order that you want to listen to them.

I did think of that, but this is a stupid problem to have don't you think?

Yes, but sadly I don't think Apple has any interest in revisiting the iPod classic firmware. iOS makes a better stab of it. I don't have a classic to hand for testing but I have a vague recollection that if you navigate to the series (rather than the episode level) and press Play you might get a play order that works for you.

It's possible that Apple have realised that this is an odd way to make the iPod work because the iPod Touch has a much improved listing for Podcasts. (I own both. Guess which one I use for Podcasts!)
I realise this isn't much help to you now, but it does suggest that Apple have sorted it out for newer models and you may want to consider that if you ever think about replacing the Classic. And yes, it is fantastic.
Now if only the iPod Touch had 160Gb of storage...

I think i will drop cookie an email, touch is cool but the classic is cooler and certainly more iconic.

i do not want to sound like I believe in conspiracies, but I think this is on purpose by Apple. I tested downloading and podcasts on my daughters iPhone and that podcast loaded correctly and plays in the correct order. I think Apple is forcing little problems into their iPod classics so that people will want to buy a new product. my iPod classic use to play podcast in the correct order until a firmware upgrade.
