Well, I didn't think it would work-but it did.  I turned off my firewall completely and my home sharing has been working for the passed 25 min (when it used to work for 5).  Maybe this will work for some of you. Going to look into keeping specific ports open so that I don't have to leave my computer totally vulnerable.

Here is what I did a week ago and so far so good. If you have an Airport Extreme or other Dual Band Router try connecting your computer (with Homesharing ) via ethernet cable to the router and then putting your ATV on the 5 GHz channel.  I haven't had a single drop out since . The ATV is the only thing on my 5 Ghz channel everything else is on the 2.4 and it all works beautifully. I know this solution seems too simple, but hey it works. I previously tried many other fixes listed here but they didn't work for me. So if you are in the same boat as me it may work.

As previously posted this also worked for me, I disabled the firewall and home sharing worked fine, and still does with firewall switched off, not an ideal solution, but it works, maybe the IT experts can tell me why this is

It's not so simple if your router is located far away from your computer. In my case, another building.

That's what wi fi is for, and why it is called a wireless router. Macs and ATVs have wireless built in. Home Sharing was advertised as a wireless feature.

Im glad you got yours working but having to plug your mac into your router is a cop out at best, and virtually impossible for some like myself (without a lot of expense running cable under a garden)...

Sorry to burst your bubble but I have Time Capsule/Airport on latest version and it is connected to iMac with ethernet cable, but that has not solve the problem.

That is exactly the issue with mine - I can get Netflix and everything except whatever is on my computer.

Also if I don't use ATV for say 10 minutes the TV no longer gets a connection so I have to restart .  That was a constant problem from the day I bought it December 2010, but then there was a major update a few motnsh ago and ATV worked FLAWLESSLY - no issues of any kind.

THen the iTunes/ ATV update and we are in update he((.  IF only I could roll back to previous versions!!

Beatmunga, I was only offering a possible solution that worked for me. If your Router is in a different building than chances are you have interferance and/or weak signal issues. You can still go totally wi-fi if you buy an Airport Express and use it in bridge mode. Then it is not as you say a "cop out" Recommend  5 Ghz  it is shorter range but less interferance.I only used the Ethernet cable to ensure a constant strong connection to the Router

PS  - I know what wifi  and a wireless router are - thank you

pstrickland - My bubble was not burst. ATV is working perfectly for me.  As soon as I switched to 5 Ghz all my issues went away.

Glad switching to 5G worked for you.  Didn't work for me or for my Dad.

Joebuda there is nothing wrong with my wireless connection as I believe we've established. Everything else BUT homesharing works fine, including streaming media for hours on end in various ways. Read my previous posts.

My different building is perhaps 20 feet at most from my very well spec'd router.

Anyway, it worked flawlessly on THE SAME HARDWARE for months.

Now it could be that the neighbour's new lawnmower is to blame but forgive me if my powers of deduction lead me to conclude that Homesharing has been a problem for Apple HENCE THEM DROPPING ANY MENTION OF IT ON THEIR STORE.

Apologies for the caps but I don't know how many times I have to point this out without people going back to the same old misguided causes and solutions. There is something very wrong that we are not being told. And no, I don't smoke weed.

As a lifelong Apple fanboy I'm starting to realise why we annoy people so much with our refusal to lay any blame on the company even when the evidence to the contrary is substantial, logical and somewhat incontrovertible.

Beatmunga, My bad I didn't read your earlier posts so didn't realize how close your router was.  I was just trying to offer a work around that worked for me . I agree it is a problem with home sharing .And also I agree Apple is ignoring a problem that lots of people are having. They have a habit of that unfortunatley.

All  I can say is that as soon as I switched my ATV to 5Ghz my problems went away and to hedge my bets I connected my cable to my mac. I know this is not an option for you given your current  setup.

With the way Apple thinks I wouldn't be surprised to find out that ( and from the way my network used slow down, I actually suspect) when Homesharing is doing its thing it hijacks most of the  bandwith available on your network to the point that if something else connects it kicks it self off.Whereas for some reason the other "Apps" on ATV stay connected And perhaps that is why having 2 networks  even on the same router works for me That off course is only a guess based on my experience with my ATV.

Anyways hope you find a solution soon

i'm just adding my voice to the fray here... i'm having the exact same problems. No it's not a wireless router problem: 1) my aTV (gen 2) can do everything else on the 'net, hit YouTube, vimeo, radio, etc. just fine.  It just refuses to pull from my library via Home Sharing, and 2) i tried it hard wired and it also did not work. Though when i plugged it in, i could push from iTunes (on MackBook Pro) to the aTV, but the aTV won't pull from iTunes via Home Sharing.

Everything was working fine until recently... i got a new router and swapped from WEP to WPA.  i figured at first it was a problem with that, but i did a full on reset on the aTV to factory settings, and while that fixed it for a time... today it's back to its old tricks (and again, even a hardwire connection to the router does no good.  And yes, there is excellent signal strength, not only are they in the same room, both reside on the same entertainment center). I'm also up-to-current on both iTunes and aTV, and the aTV did update around the time i swapped to the new router.  (and again, in case you missed it, i am convinced this is not a router/firewall issue, since everything else works fine, just not Home Sharing).  However, sometimes my iTunes and iPod won't even push to the aTV, which is even more annoying.  i refuse to throw everything in iCloud and run from that, that just seems pointless.

Apple, please fix this!! Otherwise, i have a very stylish $100 paperweight, as the main reason I have the aTV is to stream my content from my computer to my TV and sound system.

Exactly. And there are many threads with thousands of views so I suppose they are reading these threads for fun and games they have nothing better to do. Well be sure to report at the apple website

I am also having issues with the connectivity. I saw somewhere that it may have been the latest upgrade of software. Is this true? Do we know if Apple is looking into this? My ATV can connect to my network, strong signal strength, but it sees my library for a few minutes then disconnects. Not sure why or why it won't stay on. Very frustrating since it has worked well before and I didnt have issues until the latest upgrade. I havent changed anything in my system either.

Yep, me too.  Just bought latest ATV and with wi-fi or ethernet cable to either router or into modem, it drops out after 5 or 10 minutes... this has to be a firmware issue.  Can't see any pattern about when it happens -- nothing is seemingly 'going to sleep' and iTunes keeps saying homesharing is still connected.  All versions up to date...

I bought it to have all my Apple devices wirelessly connected, and even with 'band-aid' solutions that involve an ethernet cable I can't do that.  Watching something from my home computer and having it turn off every 5 minutes is just not right.... Boxee box here I come.
