Re sidebar font size - Leopard does not seem to have a General Heading in System Preferences, so am stymied there - it is soooo frustrating...............

In Mail>Preferences>Fonts & Colors>Mailbox Font, have you tried changing the Font as well as the point size?
Unfortunately that info is held in the big main .plist for Mail.

Very many thanks - but have tried that - it just seems to interfere with the layout of the font size box which changes in the middle section to show a plain box with part of a giant letter in it. This stays until I come out of the Fonts & colours and return later! Suggestion much appreciated, but...............

Quit Mail, open Font Book & validate all Fonts & check for duplicates.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Does it work in Safe Mode?

Just completed instructions - very carefully as never done that type of procedure before. I am afraid there is no change........ sidebar font still huge. But thanks very much for trying.

Deleting would require setting up any accounts once again, editing would require...
The APPs to use to edit plists...
Property List Editor is part of Developer Tools, you may or may not have that on your Install Discs.
