I should also have noted in my above problem-statement that my Word windows on my Air (undocked) no longer display the lower information bar (that includes such things as page and word count), and I can't figure out how to get those to display again!

I also have this exact same issue and I'd appreciate any feedback from people who have worked around this issue. When I disconnect from the TB Display, I can click on the + to maximise the window to fit my MBP 15" screen and then re-size to fit the MBP screen. But this is really annoying to do each time!
Any input would be most valuable!

I also have these issues. I can cope with just pressing the + to shrink apps like Outlook back down to the full 13" Air screen but it is really a PITA when the app ends up off the screen with no way to retrieve it.

I am having the same issues. Called Apple Support last week and went through some settings etc. but no fix found. They ask me to try it on a different TBD and report back. I did this yesterday but the same issues. So it is not my display but the TBD in general. I will call them after this weekend and ask them to come up with a fix as rezising the windows each time i conect or disconect the machine is rather annoying.
P.S. The green button does not work with iTunes as it shrinks the window completly.

After getting back in touch with Apple Support today the only momentary fix to this annoying problem is to use your windows in fullscreen. For me this is not a solution therefore i wrote a feedback to Apple suggesting an update of OS X including the resizing of the open windows after a change of resolution of the display. To speed up the process i would advise all of you with the same problem to do the same.

Any luck finding a solution to this problem? I've been searching for a workaround but no luck. I did find an app in the app store called "stay" which sounds like it would fix the problem. But's it's $14.99 and I'm a little hesitant to pay that much for a utility that I shouldn't really need in the first place.
However... there is an app called Better Snap tool, that I absolutely love. It helps resizing windows and it absolutely amazing. (It doesn't specifically address this issue, but it's helpful.)
Let me know if you've had any luck resolving this.

Thank you so much baneyw. I just purchased "Stay" in the App Store and it works like a charm. All my windows are arranged automatically the way i want them to be as soon as i connect or disconnect the Thunderbolt Display. This simple feature should be included in OS X by Apple.
