OK - more details/info now.
When I use terminal and type this:
I believe the DVD drives makes the odd noise I heard when I booted the laptop up.
I'm guessing that means my fan/hardrive are actually OK then, and it's probably the mechanism in the DVD drive that is causing problems?
I'm almost certain there's no DVD stuck in there?
Thanks for your reply. The thing is, it's only started making the noise in the last day or two.
Before that, it made a normal noise (that I've had on MBP & laptops before) - but now it's grindy/whirry, more sounding like a problem/broken mechanism or something.
I never use the DVD drive, that's the oddest thing.
If my computer got too hot, does anyone think it could cause it to melt a little/damage it?
Do you think its just normal ware on the drive?
Like how a hard drive can get louder when it gets older/fuller, but still pass all SMART tests.
Heat can always cause issues, but thats a hard one to pinpoint.
The drive could just be worn in making more noise as a result, but I bet apple could always toss you a new one right?
Take her into Apple and they should be able to let you know/help you out.
Yeah, I guess ultimately that's what I'll need to do.
It's clearly related to the DVD drive in some way, as I said, when I forcibly "eject" that's when the noise occurs... same noise as when I boot up.
I wonder if the heat has 'melted' or bent something inside the DVD drive, haha.
Anyway, thanks everyone for their help.
Yep, I hear this too, like a long dragged on gruntling when the dvd comes out.
Uggggrrrrrrr kinda sound.
I hear it too, which had me worried, but when I burn and read from the disk its nearly quiet.
Let me know if Apple replaces it for you (and it fixes the noise), I might have to fix mine if it isnt considered normal.
