You can run something like OmniDiskSweeper (free).  It will list your folders in order of size and then you can browse through them to see what is eating up your space:

"Other" is basically everything that isn't in one of the other categories (Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps and Backups).  There's a LOT of stuff that doesn't fit in one of those categories!  Like most of the system, almost every kind of personal documents (text files, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF files, etc) and any kind of archives you may have downloaded from somewhere and never deleted (.dmg files, .zip files, .pkg files, etc), just to name some common examples.

Plus, it's unclear what Audio, Movies and Photos means.  For example, Photos certainly includes JPEG files and a number of RAW formats.  But what about GIF or PNG files, which do not typically have photographic content?  Or other graphics files, like EPS, SVG, PostScript, .psd, .ai, etc?  Any of those might be large and may be listed under "Other."

People seem to stress way more than is necessary over that category.  I'd recommend not worrying about it so much.  If your hard drive starts getting too full, use a tool like OmniDiskSweeper to figure out what you can get rid of for the greatest effect.
